From the looks of it your optic should be plenty to see the impact at a couple hundred yards. Just don't shoot at something black and it'll make it easier to see your impact. Or you can use the shoot-n-c's. That's a great starter gun, have fun with it.04 2.6 KB'd Cobra!

I have a Remington Model 700 chambered in 308. I've just neglected it after turning all my attention to EBR's. With the lack of available EBR parts, I should focus on building the Remington to something similar to yours and the other great looking bolt guns posted in this thread.

The remington 700 is a great starting platform. And 308 is a great starting caliber. But it's cheaper to learn and put the fundamentals into muscle memory with the 17. There is a good link on the hide talking about how to work your way up and become a great long range shooter. I'll try and find it and post it for you and anyone else looking to really get into the sport. Lots of great ideas in that thread.04 2.6 KB'd Cobra!

I like the idea of having a .17 or a .22 as a trainer, and if you need to learn your fundamentals they are also very good for something like that.
I don't think it will replace a full size rifle. Learning to follow though on recoil, manage recoil etc etc are something you can't do w/ a .22 I would think you should have both really. I need to set up a .22 trainer pretty soon, but most of the things I work on are positional shooting as of late. That and wind reading. I know you can practice wind reading w/ .22, but I'm not really sure how well it transfers over to long range precision shooting when you are looking at changing winds out to 1000 yards.
Of course if you're not talking about shooting long range, I'll just shut up.
