I'll take my Hogue rubber grips for shooting, and any wood/ivory/anything else, for a display case, but that's just me. I remember at the shooting GTG at shoot smart that 454 with wood grips was jumping out of everyone's hands. I much more of a "function" person, as long as it's not atrocious, and those grips function.

And that's a good looking gun, Cooter.

That thing probably weighs about as much as I do. I'm disappointed I didn't get a text.

I never really cared for wood on stainless. I like those hogue's. Looks like an N frame with the exposed back strap. If so I believe those grips would interchange with a model 29.

              686's are L frame.

Another note, I love the old dash models of the 686, thats a gorgeous gun! Anything -4 or later just isn't the same Old school Smiths rock

I'm saying it looks like an N frame with an exposed strap. The grip looks almost identical to an N frame grip.

thank you sir! I was willing to compromise if I could find a nice no lock 7 round, but I really wanted the -3

K and L are interchangeable, if you swap with N frame it will take some work/trimming to make it line up completely.

Those grips on that .454 are for function. They allow the gun to be carried without a gigantic sticky rubber grip catching clothing and making it an annoyance. ( They actually improved shootability, IMO)

Today is the 2nd time I've had this gun at the range. This gun just amazes me! Using 125 grain bullets I'm shooting the red center out of targets 25 yards away and I'm nowhere close to a good shot. Got to shoot my glock 20 10mm for the first time today too and it's way more accurate then I thought it would be. I'm stoked I'm finally able to decipher out good guns. After buying that s&w sigma 40, I'll never not spend the extra few hundred dollars to get something quality!

                          I got another one! 686-4

It's a 1995 model that's essentially identical to my -3. in '96, they got rid of the square butt.

This one is in really nice shape. Came with the original box/manuals/etc. The wife doesn't understand why I needed another one LOL

Did you ever get different grips for the -3?

                            The SS ones sound interesting.

no, still the rubber Hogue grips...

I've grown to like them. The polished -3 is my go-to "what was that noise?" gun. I've only ever fired it with those grips, and it feels comfortable to me now.

This -4 has no scratches and barely any drag line were my -3 had both. I'm leaving this one factory finish. It looks pimp w/ the wood grips

I have the wood gripped version in a 4" that was a carry revolver for a CHP officer. Best gun I own.
