Really well. I have never shot a witness variant. The way the slide fits down in the frame really helps with recoil. My wife shoots it like a champ. It definitely performs better in single action though.

Glad you like it. I love witnesses. You can smooth out the double action with some sandpaper, metal polish, and a few hours.

My smith is Shumaker Gunworks in Stephenville. He's the gunsmith attached to Star Arms, where I used to work. (254) 968-3852. The Hi-Power cut is the slight narrowing of the slide at the front. That has to be milled away. The roundbutt job requires a different mainspring housing, which he pins in place, then he scores the frame and files the point of the corner away. Wilson Combat makes the MSH, in either aluminum or steel. I chose aluminum since that's what my frame is. He priced the whole job, including recoating the gun in matte black gunkote at $225. I don't know if that was a buddy price, but I wouldn't expect it to be too far off that.

So what does the Hi-Power cut help with? Also looking at the roundbutt job and comparing it to pictures I've seen of others like from Wilson, yours doesn't seem as dramatic. I'm at work right now so I can't post a picture but I was just wondering what your thoughts on this.

Either way, I love the look of the gun. I'm interested in sending your gunsmith my Kimber for some work and getting a new finish on it.

All of the Rugers have a four digit product code. The one for this one is 6708. Tell your favorite gun dealer to order Ruger #6708, or put that product code into slickguns.com. If you like government-length guns, they make one of those as well. If you don't care about the gun being a lightweight, get the regular stainless version and save money for the mods you want. You can always get it coated. After that, if you want custom work you have to go to a smith that gives you the warm fuzzies. I can't speak highly enough of mine. He used to smith for Thunder Ranch when they were in Fredericksburg.

EDIT: I almost forgot. TALO is a buying group of wholesalers servicing Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. They do some really cool shit.

The Wilson roundbutt job is kind of underwhelming, but still very functional. It takes that little pointy corner out of the frame, without eliminating a lot of grip. The Ed Brown bobtail and S&W/Kimber roundbutt are both much more pronounced. Initially, I hunted one of those mainspring housings, but I couldn't find one. I don't think they like selling them individually. The Hi-Power cut is mostly cosmetic, but it lets you draw and holster your pistol a little easier. I wanted to do it on my Colt XSE, but the forward cocking serrations would make it look weird. I'll probably get an O-series slide and do it eventually, but that's down the road. If Ruger builds a 9mm version of the Night Watchman, I'll be building another one of these.

With the 20 rounder it'll be real compact. pistol came with 2 30 round mags, but I found the 20 rounders for $8.99 (and they fit like shit)
