  • 9mm data all over the place

So I reload 9mm, 45 ACP, 223, and 308 to cut my range costs down. I don't try and load ultra hot rounds or push any envelopes. I actually got into reloading thanks to CJ's posts and DFM.net. So I bought the ABCs book and read it and got the RCBS rock crusher kit. I've added a lyman vibratory cleaner and lyman case prep station to it (trimmer etc.). I've also picked up a 2nd kit the Hornady single stage kit. I love Hornady ammo and components so I thought their kit might be a good deal. It has a digital scale too, which I've never used.

So anyway I now have a Speer, Lyman and Hornady manual. My first 9mm batches were loaded per the Speer manual with 7.1 gr of Blue Dot for 124 gr RN FMJ bullets. The bullets are actually Berry's, but they are 124 gr RN FMJ. So my Hornady manual says load these at 5.2 gr never to exceed 5.9!!! The velocities listed are quite a bit lower. Now my Lyman manual says to load them from 6.3 to 6.9 gr, never to exceed 6.9!!! The Speer manual says I can take them up to 7.8 gr!!!!

Anyone ever see this kind of variance in the load data from one manual to another? The OAL won't be that much different, although it's one thing I didn't check. The primer used shouldn't make much difference, or does it?

I didn't have any issues at 7.1 gr in any of my 9mm guns (Sigs, Springers, and a CZ), but I did have some impressive muzzle flash. I'm sure backing off to the Hornady specs won't hurt and it cuts my cost per round a bit too. I'm just shocked at the range in data.

    Any input or suggestions?

Yes, there will always be load data differences between manuals as each manual had their own set of tests and variables.

A good rule of thumb is to average the min and max from all sources you have. Drop down 15-20% or so from your averaged max charge and start from there.

If available I use the recommendation from the powder itself or from the powder manufacture. I trust them since they make the boom.

I will give you the best reloading guide to 9mm you will ever see. You will never need another. Hornady tends to be very conservative with their loads. Their max charges are usually in the safe zone on other load data. I use 4gr bullseye for 124gr bullseye. Never had an issue.

The thing to always remember when you're talking about load data is what is dangerous, and what isn't. Velocity isn't dangerous, it's the pressure. So when they give you the charge and the velocity table, that's great, but those are all derivatives of the pressure, which they usually don't give you, or give cryptic indications. With one powder you may be able to get a 158gr .357 to 1300fps before max pressure. With another powder you can do 1650fps, and it's safer (less pressure) than the previous one. So what I value is scientific pressure data with each powder. Midwayusa did load maps several years ago which give you the actual pressure maps every 10th of a grain for every powder and every bullet ever made in the caliber. It is absolutely incredible data. If you're interested (or anyone) just let me know.

CJ, is there a link to the pressure data table or something you have saved that can be emailed? I'm interested in a copy...

I went with the low side of Alliant's data for the 9mm on both the blue and red dot. I will be loading a bunch of 45 ACP this weekend with red dot.

I wish I could find pistol powder locally...... I'm going to run out of blue dot soon and there are other powders I would like to try. The 4 lbs of red dot I have will load a lot of 45 range ammo.

There's been plenty of powder at the gun shows at a decent price when you figure in buying online and paying shipping plus a hazmat fee.

Funny you say that. I went to the fort worth gun show this past weekend and it sucked big green donkey balls. I didn't find any of the four pistol powders I was willing to buy: power pistol, hs-6, AA #5 or Blue Dot. I'm about to take a royal screwing on Power Pistol or HS-6 on gunbroker I guess.

Look for Dallas Reloading Supply, they're at all the major shows in the metroplex.
