  • Finally in the game!

My fiance got me a press and a tumbler for my birthday. Lee challenger press kit, Lee 9mm carbide die set and a Frankfort Arsenal tumbler. All of the reviews were positive and the price fit the budget. I got the press mounted last night. I still need to pick up projectiles, powder, and primers before I can send my first loads down range. I plan to clean up and de-prime all of my 9 mm brass and pick up the rest of the supplies I need over the next month or so.

What do you guys consider must have equipment? I plan to re-load .223, .40, and 9mm right now. The kit came with the press, dispenser, manual scale, case trimmer, and a hand primer. The hand primer seems like it might be a little quicker than using the primer arm on the press.

I plan to pick up a digital scale with my next ordrr. Beyond that I am not sute what is considered essential.

I will post pictures of my set up once I get my work area set up and cleaned.

sounds like a good set up...I can't wait to get into reloading...maybe then I'll start to shoot more.

My fiance enjoys shooting more each time we go, so I am hoping reloading will help save us a little money and encourage us to shoot more.

        Digital Caliper
Case lube - for .223, either pad or spray. I use Hornady one shot for my .308 reloading.
Collet bullet puller die for the press and collets for the calibers you will be loading
        Primer pocket cleaning tool
        Case mouth deburring/chamfer tool
Loading blocks - to hold the primed/charged cases waiting for bullets

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Maybe others can chime in with other suggestions on essential equipment.

Wilson case gauges for whatever rifle calibers you plan to reload. Check Amazon first as sometimes they'll have some insane deals, otherwise, order from Midway and hunt down one of their monthly coupons

Do you have any issues with the one shot lube. I hear of a lot of stuck cases with it. I use hornady unique which is more like a wax in consistency.

I'll second phaux on a case gauge of some kind. I use a sinclair shoulder bump gauge myself.

Thanks for the input guys. The only thing I am lacking is powder to put together some 9mm test loads. Sounds like I need to pick up a few more items though

I haven't had any issues with the One Shot, but have read where others have. I put 25-30 cases in a quart ziploc bag. Just enough that all cases lay flat. The. spray the lube in the bag, seal it up and roll the cases around to coat them well. Put them in the loading block and make a quick pass over the top to lube the case mouths. It doesn't take much lube. I think I'm still using the same can I bought last year. Granted I don't reload in much volume.

That's the process I see a lot of. I think I'm going on my 6th year with this tub of unique and its still 2/3 full as a little goes a really long way. I typically load 100 rifle a month minimum.

I use one shot, and have never had a problem with it. I put 50 cases in a holder, and just give a quick spray to all four sides, holding the can at about a 45 degree angle to get the mouth. Never had a stuck case.

My wife enjoys it more each time we go too. Once I actually had everything set up she even helped with some 9mm reloads the other day! I dropped the powder handed her the case and she set the bullet in and ran it up into the seating die for me. It saved me some time, and she likes being involved in the process too. It's amazing what she is willing to do or try if I just ask and remain calm through her questions.
