  • Help me with a theory - carbine buffer in a rifle stock

So, one of the things I would like to do is swap from a carbine length stock on a particular receiver to a fixed stock. I have been playing with the idea of modifying an A2 buttstock to accept a carbine buffer and then use a C-clip or something to hold it against the receiver. Anyone every heard of someone doing that before? The idea being the ability to swap from a fixed stock to an adjustable quickly.

You could put a spring-loaded detent pin into the bottom of an A2 stock to go onto a carbine buffer tube, after the modification. You could also make a square cut and use a knurled knob and run a little threaded piece up into, for a little more positive retention, like an adjustable cheek piece on a bolt action stock.

I see what you're saying. The problem with the detent is it needs a race to ride in to hold it in position. The buffer tube is far too thin to remove any material from, so I don't think that would work for me. I see what you're saying on the knob. That makes me wonder. How about I just modify a carbine adjuster to drop the lock into one of the slots when the buttstock is all the way forward against the receiver. That would probably would really well. Then just pull a ring or whatever to pull the lock free of the adjustment hole and slide it off.

That's exactly what I mean by a detent. A ring, or a little pull knob would work great. Whatever it is would need to be vertical, and as far back as possible, so you could lock it into the last spot on the buffer tube.

Are you looking for the look of an A2 or just a fixed stock?

if just a fixed stock why not use one of these?

Fixed stock, slides on to a carbine buffer tube, locks in place and comes in A1 and A2 lengths

I'm building an M16A2 w/ M203 upper for my M16. I want to be able to change to the correct look when I use that upper. Should be a fun project.

This would look ridiculous with one of these modern stocks in lieu of the A2 stock, haha.

Id be curious to see how it works/turns out. I always just replace the entire stock getup.

Biggest challenge I see is cutting the keyway for the buffer tube in the stock. being that its mostly just dense foam and thin plactic around the tube it shouldn't be too hard

drill and tap a hole in the back of the carbine buffer tube install the carbine buffer tube with the castle nut and lock plate cut your A1or2 stock up front to clear the castle nut and plate. then just use a longer screw to catch the buffer tube from the rear

modern stocks, like the on posted above. I think the fixed traditional stock is much better looking.

Yes that's what I was thinking, using a longer screw, or tig an aluminum nut on the back of the carbine tube inside, the spring would straddle it. But, that takes much more time to install, so I do like the idea of using one of the adjustment holes.

I'm confused, what would using a carbine buffer do for you that a full length rifle buffer wouldn't? Seems like it would be easier to buy an A2 fixed stock and full length buffer.

Then I'm stuck with that stock on every upper.
