Heck, I could bring it by if you want to take a look. I could bring the cases I have been testing along with some new ones if it would help? Just not sure what to do at this point and dont want to spend $150 on a one time use tool.

What do you recommend for a case length gauge?
L.E. Wilson gauges are the industry standard. They work great.

Honestly, it would probably be cheaper and smarter to just call Andrew Atwell and drop off that barrel and have him look it over and fix it. That or send it back to the manufacturer. It's rare, but bad barrels do get made on occasion.

RedX is who made it; it’s one of their 20" Diamond Fluted barrels. I emailed them but of course, their customer service is less than stellar

They'll fix it. They custom cut a barrel for me free of charge to spec it for my piston setup.

If it is doing the same on just a sized case it is more than just a throat issue. Provided they are sized properly.

I got with Chad from THF and he gave me a pretty easy solution. Basically, the chamber is a match grade chamber, which is machined to a tighter spec than most other "nato" barrels. What was working for my old AR is not working for my new one.

He suggested I remove the de-priming pin and nut from my FL sizing die. Then, contrary to what Lee states, instead of backing the die out 1-1/12 turns after it touches the ram, turn it inward almost too where the ram is not able to cam over. This ensures that you get the case ALL the way into the die. By removing the pin, I was able to resize my already loaded ammo without having to take it apart.

A very simple solution, kind of made me feel stupid or "why didn’t I think of that". The web of the case was not entering the die all the way.

I guess it really could have been a number of things, my solution just happened to be the easiest, and cheapest, thank god.

Hell I haven't read much over there besides the "big bore" thread. Chad knows his shit, it's nice having him around.

That's the way I set all my rifle dies (except neck sizing dies) up. RAM all the way up touch the die, then add half turn or so and I've never had an issue.

I tend to cross post on both just so I get a good sample of opinions. I never really thought about it, but a sizing die (FL) can really be adjusted down as far as you want.

I am just glad I didnt get the "if you dont know what your doing" response...lol

For future reference, this is why you need a case gauge, you would have seen this since a case gauge IS a match chamber.

You need a small base die for resizing.

I hear this occasionally, but I'd like to mention I have never used a small base die for any of my rifle loads and never had any problem in at least 50 rifles. My guess is the die wasn't run down far enough. Case gauge!

He doesn't need a small base if he properly sizes with a plain FL die.

Edit: I've had the same experiences as CJ and that was with a Garand as well which is not the most gentle of actions.

If he has a tight chamber, even with a full length die, it might not be enough. He still may need a small base die. Seen a few of AR's that needed it. (Two 5.56's and ONE AR-10 .308)

He already solved the issue by setting the FL die up properly.
