I was looking at the different types of dies for .223 and .300 blk and would like input on what y'all use. The small base dies or the regular full length dies? Sounds like some people say you need the small base dies if you are running the ammo in an AR. What says my DFWM re-loaders? Also what kind of crimp should I be looking for taper or roll crimp?

Most any manufacturers will recommend small base for semi autos. That being said the only auto loading rifle I've ever loaded for was a Garand and all I used was plain RCBS dies with no crimp. I had no issues at all loading/ shooting the rounds with no issues of bullet movement and the Garand action is pretty violent in movement compared to the AR. As far as brands I really have come to like Redding dies but have a lot of RCBS that have lasted 50yrs with no issues. I don't crimp a thing I load for rifles I'm pretty sure a few here do and they can give you some insight there."It's another burrito, it's a cold Lone Star in my hand!"

I've never used a small based die myself, never had a problem. Just regular dies work fine. For .223 you can't go wrong with a Lee factory crimp die, but a typical taper crimp will work fine also."When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." -Benjamin Franklin

Thanks guys.
I was looking at either the RCBS full length dies or the lee pacesetter dies. I am probably going with the lee because Midway has the RCBS dies, but no shell holder, and Grafs has the shell holder but no dies. The Lee comes with the shell holder so I save on shipping. These are the .300 blk dies.Last edited by bobs94formula; 04-03-2013, 08:25 AM.92 LX 5.0
