  • AR questions.

I'm an AR noob and i hear all you guys talking about them. But i've been getting the itch to build one. But as i've been looking up parts i see AR upper stripped, AR upper kit, AR upper complete, and the same with lowers. Then i see like 20 brands of parts. I'd like to build it and not have anything come built. So i'm wondering if you guys could give me like just a general list? That i can check off.

I'm not looking to build a real expensive one my first time around. Just looking to build a cheap to mid-range one. Something to go target practice with and get the hang of putting one together. And there is no rush. i'm thinking i'll buy parts here and there and visit some gun shows.

I've been watching youtube videos and it seems there is a different upper, lower, barrel and tools used for different guns. It's kinda throwing me for a loop. So any help would be great. Thanks.

    Basic list:

    Upper Receiver
    Barrel
    Bolt Carrier Group

    Stripped Lower Receiver
Lower Parts Kit (trigger, hammer, safety ect.)
Butt stock (with buffer tube, spring and buffer)

    Sights (front and rear)

Are you thinking about assembling the upper half yourself? Or when you say build are you just meaning build out a stripped lower receiver?

Building the whole thing if possible? Upper and lower?

Delta ring, gas tube, front grip, front sight block, barrel wrench.

If you're interested in a stripped upper you will need a door, forward assist, spring, pin.

I woukd suggest an assembled upper minus a barrel. Buy the barrel and gas tube/fsb yourself.

Right now you can build an upper for about 250, lower for about 170, and bcg for around 80. Just takes tine, tools, and patience.

Well if your going to build your upper yourself you're going to need a few tools. IE: Barrel wrench, vise, action block, set of roll pin punches, retaining pin pliers, strap wrench, molyb, loctite and a torque wrench foot lbs. and a headspace gauge is always a good idea.

          AR wrench

          Vice Block

Brownells has been the leader in Gunsmithing Tools & Gun Parts since 1939. Check out the BRN-180 line of firearms, and more!

          Stripped upper (A2,A3,A4)

upper parts kit ( if your upper has forward assist)

          BCG

          Barrel (16, 18, 20 ect.)

Gas tube ( carbine, mid-lengh, rifle)

Gas Block (A2, low profile, ect)

          Hand guard (A2, freefloat)

          stripped lower

          parts kit http://www.del-ton.com/AR_15_Lower_P...t_p/lp1045.htm

stock w/ buffer, buffer tube, buffer spring

and it feels like i'm forgetting something
You remember the stories John use to tell us about the the three chinamen playing Fantan? This guy runs up to them and says, "Hey, the world's coming to an end!" and the first one says, "Well, I best go to the mission and pray," and the second one says, "Well, hell, I'm gonna go and buy me a case of Mezcal and six whores," and the third one says "Well, I'm gonna finish the game." I shall finish the game, Doc.

Is that complete? And all online? Or just shopping around for parts? So total on that one would be $500? Complete and ready to fire?

Are all those parts interchangeable? Or do you have to have all A2 with A2 stuff ect?? And I have access to all that stuff. Actually have most of the tools in my toolbox as i work on Diesels/Transmissions. Except the Barrel Wrench and Vice Block.

For the upper you wil need.
Upper Reciever (Recommend a Upper with dust cover and foward assist)(if you go flat top don't forget rear sight)
Barrel with barrel nut (with or without flash hidder)
Gas Block with gas tube (with or without sights)
Handguards with attaching hardware (should come with the kit)
              Charging handle
              Bolt and carrier group

              Bare lower
              Lower Parts Kit (LPK)
              Grip
Buffer tube (with buffer and spring)
              Stock

The AR is like a mustang, there are so many options and mods.

You can get kits from Del-Ton, Model 1 Sales and a few other places. I have had good luck at Midway USA and Rainier Arms for parts and tools. Midway also has a good how to for barrel assembly on their website.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

Barrel wrench and vise block are specific to ARs. You will need a handful of punches, vise grip (personal prefrence), small hammer, etc.

DPMS is selling their Oracle kit for less than $500. You have to assemble the whole thing. Don't forget an action block and an AR wrench. You ought to at least see if these guys will let you tag along on their group build. The experience would do you good.

I just looked that up. So all i would need is a lower receiver correct? And i might see if i can if i have all my parts ready by then.

If I were in the position to build another one I'd go with this. You can't beat the price with those handguards.

That's all the parts you would need. Read up and familiarize yourself with the tools you need on ar15.com.

So i wouldn't need a lower receiver? And that seems like a pretty decent deal just to get the hang of it. And i've been looking up some tools doesn't seem to be anything to hard to get.

You would still need to purchase and build a lower receiver.
