That way you can see if it's worth your investment, and if you would enjoy it.

Damn now this is really making me want a progressive. Now I gotta try to figure out of the XL650 is worth the coin or to just go with the LnL AP

I'm a pretty big fan of mine. I think it's worth the extra money over the 550.

Oh I have no doubt the 650 is better than the 550. Im just trying to justify the extra cost of the 650 over the Hornady LnL

Oh, well does it help if me and CJ tell you that Dillon is better just cause?? Lol. I'm sure CJ has some more insight, but that's if for me. To me the Dillon presses are as good as they get. And you can't fight with their lifetime warranty (no BS warranty) as they call it.

Is that the oak work bench that Harbor Freight sells? If so how do you like it? I've thought about using it as a base for when I have enough money to get into reloading.

Oh I know, I love my Square Deal-B even though it uses those crazy proprietary dies and whatnot. I inherited it, otherwise I probably would not have bought it. I'm really a fan of Dillon's CS too, but from what I hear Hornady is right up there as well... kinda driven there by Dillon and having to keep up. I like the idea of the toolhead, but the camming action of the Hornady as well as the shellplate seems like a better design. Oh and the de-priming system how it doesn't just arbitrarily fall through the press seems like a good call to keep the crud from gunking up the inside of the press (all technical terms). Even still, I know Dillon and I know they make a quality piece and have for a long time. Damn decisions lol

Not sure what you mean about the priming path, but it drops it from a hopper into a bin, I've never cleaned mine in 20k rounds through that press - that's a non issue. It's all whether or not you want an auto-indexing press or not. Just remember each dillon level you go up - 550, 650, 1050 - the caliber conversion kits double in price and complexity.

True dat!! I really want a 1050, but I really don't want to pay for the caliber conversions, or do them for that matter.

On another note, do you have a 650 CJ?? And if so, how do you keep your shellplate from "snapping" into the correct position when indexing and spilling powder on the more full cases like 9MM and 223?

I use a 550, it works for what I do, but a 650 would be better. The thing about it is caliber conversions on the 650 are time consuming and the kits are more expensive/intricate. So, really it's more of a pain in the ass if you only do moderate volume on several calibers - I'd say a 550 is better for that. If you load a large volume of a few calibers than a 650 would be a better choice. For me, I think I'm going to look into a 1050 as you can convert them to auto loaders, and I'll probably only use it for .223, and maybe .308 on occasion. The rest of my ammo volumes are rarely over 1000rds a sitting so that's only an hours work on a 550. I notice a lot of guys go out and buy a progressive that exceeds what they'll really ever need it for. So basically if you're going to average around 100-1000 rds of say 5-10 calibers than 550 is your best choice. If you're going to do 1000+ of 3 calibers than a 650 is better. And a 1050 would be if you're going to do 5k+ of a single caliber. The reason I say that is to me reloading is all about efficiency of time, if you spend 20 minutes doing a caliber conversion on a 650 and 5 minutes on a 550 than the 550 is already 15 minutes quicker right off the bat. Not to mention cheaper.

I do not have much experience with the Hornady LNL, it's most closely matched to the 650 since it's an auto indexer. Just remember if you're not going to buy a case feeder than an auto indexer is pretty pointless. And case feeders also need discs for every caliber. The last time I priced the LNL compared to a 650 they came out to be pretty similar in price WITH the case feeder. I know people who have them and they seem happy. However, as good as the customer service is, I would be really surprised if they were as good as Dillon. I literally call them up, tell them my name and what I broke and they have it in the mail to me, no questions asked.

As for the snapping problem you described, that's usually due to the shell plate having too much vertical play. The cases will cant slightly when the detent locks in and it will shoot powder out. Another thing you could try is using a slightly lower pressure spring on the detent ball bearing.
