I will concede that point but my groups at that distance would be under 14" because that is how big I made my gongs. I also make a point of shooting from an unknown distance.

Look at the group sizes optics VS match peep sight at 1000 yard matches. The groups are within .4" of each other if you are measuring the winners in each classes groups.

I just got a 7mm Mag and that thing is a beast. Are you planning on hunting eventually with it? It might be a little overkill for the white tail here for me, but I can take it a bit west and go Elk hunting too. It would be more than enough for the range you need.

Yeah that is the other thing, it would be nice to have a rifle to hunt with as well.

Any decent bolt action in .308, .30-06, 7mm Mag, .300 Win Mag, etc will get the job done at the ranges you are looking at.

What do you want to hunt? What is your budget? Is barrel life a concern? Recoil issues?
I suggest you contact Jay Ruby at North Texas rifle precision for some good Training.

A hunting rifle and long range ultra-accurate rifle are often different beasts. A hunting rifle is a nice rifle, but something that you wouldnt mind hiking around with all day, getting a little beat up and something that can handle the elements fine and wont be pissed if you drop it or something.

This rifle you want to take out to 1000yds and shoot extremely accurately is almost certainly gonna have a very heavy and long barrel on it, a nice benchrest stock (again, probably) and high quality optics (VERY).

disclaimer: this is a generalized statement, not to say hunting rifles arent accurate or you cant kill with a target rifle.

Personally I have my .308 Savage 111 for hunting, it has a sporter barrel, decent (Nikon Buckmaster) optics, and a synthetic stock so its not something I'd worry all too much about getting beat up or dirty. Later on I definitely have plans for a target rifle, but that will be a different rig completely

OKC gun range holds black powder cartridge competition, they shoot standing, to 500 yards, and optics are not allowed.

Last I heard they were building a 1000m range for the 50 crowd.

It is a really nice range, but damn it is a pain to make that drive. I used to go on saturday and camp out on the range in Norman, and still dog tired by the time i got home sunday.

If you don't reload then .308win is the best bet, if you reload there are a lot more options to choose from.

Personally, for a long range shot, I enjoy the .50 caliber BMG round but that's just me. I tend to go for overkill.

You may try and reach out to Jose, he was lookng to sell his (and what used to be mine) Savage 10fp in .308. I think he's still got the Leupold glass on it too. Heavy barrel, synhetic stock - damn thing was more than a nail driver, was orbital weapon. Farthest i ever shot was 1100 yds and was and absolute joy to shoot.

I reload .308 all the time.

It's a good round but if you're a reloader there are a lot of better options out there, most that use less elevation and definitely less wind hold. I had one for a lil over three years but once I got my 7mm the 308 Win was gone, it just couldn't compete.
