  • Can this be fixed?

I am refinishing the wood on my Winchester 1200. I just conditioned and stained it and it looks like I botched the sanding on the back of the stock. This is a shooter, not a show gun so it really doesn't have to be perfect, but I'm a perfectionist.

The pictures below are the conditioned and stained stages, you can see the shiny part on the back. This is fresh stain, 20 minutes after it was applied so it has not fully dried. I know I still have Tru-oil left but I don't expect that to change anything as far as color.

I am wondering if I should stop now and re-sand and re-stain the back half? Can I just tape off and redo the effected areas or do I have to do the entire piece again?

yes you need to finish sanding it, you will have some pretty gnarly color blotching if you don't. With as hot as it is outside, you can condition, stain, and tru oil the gun in a single day, I would focus on getting the wood done correctly. I suggest you use a thin sanding block in foam for that. You should 2 step your sanding grits, start with a rough one and then move to a finer grit to make sure you do not have and sanding scratches in the wood, or they will show up.

Thanks. Well I guess I learned that lesson the hard way. Should have done it right the first time, now I get to do it twice.

I think I'm going to get a different color stain also, I think Red Mahogany is too dark for this wood.

that's some pretty dark black walnut. If you're using tru-oil it will darken it more.

This was my first time working with stain so I couldn't imagine how dark that was going to be. I think I might just use plain Tru-oil once I finish re-sanding, I think the wood looks pretty good by itself.
