In some places (like Alaska) it's illegal to shoot a moose and not collect the meat. They have numerous places you can donate it if you're just hunting for sport.
It's illegal everywhere in the US to let a game animal go to waste.

It's against the law to shoot across river in Alaska as well. However, shooting one of them big bulls on the side of the river is ideal, as you are hauling him out via river boat or float plane.
