If you are serious about varmint hunting, you want a .17 HMR.

I have shot a .17 through an entire ream of paper (500 sheets) and it will penetrate a hockey puck (in shrapnel).

The .17 has a LOT more reach than a .22 LR, and a flatter trajectory.

I know a tube fed rifle is less sexy/tacticool, but it gets the job done.
I have an Model 60 too, but I wouldn't say it's any more reliable, and its a go nowhere rifle. The Model60 would be an excellent choice if the 10/22 had no aftermarket.

Why must one "mod" a rifle that is simplistic perfection?

The model 60 is a better shooter out of the box than the 10/22.

A couple of years ago I bought both of the boys stainless Marlin Model 60s. I took them both to Alpine and a target at 20 yards is rediculously easy, so we set shotgun shells up on the top rail and started picking them off. Even that was pretty damn easy for me, and Chandler was hitting 9/10 shots.

I had a 10/22 for a while that I loved, and would love to have another, but after buying my savage 93R17 i was sold on the .17HMR. The ammo isn't as common or as cheap as .22lr, but its still pretty cheap and a great varmint round.

I wonder if it's not too late to change the OP's mind?

Between the two, I would go with the .17 HMR. At Elm Fork range, I knew you couldn't shoot 22LR on the 100 yd. range, but the range officer told me that the .17 HMR is allowed on the 100. Something to think about, 22LR- 50 yards and under, .17 HMR- 100 yards and under.

I wonder if Alpine would allow .17 HMR on their 100 yard range even though it's a rim fire.

Oh yeah, x2 on the Savage and the CZ, in .17 HMR, of course.

Take a look at the thompson center benchmark .22 heavy barrel, very nice and very accurate but the price is up there around the $400.00 range.

Here is my Savage 93 in 17hmr. I have taken squirrels, rabbits, and noisy ass field larks out to around 200y with it. Taken decent sized hogs outta my feeder which is 127y.
