I was thinking about Mossberg Model 817 Bolt-Action Rifle .17 HMR 21" Bull Barrel 6 Rounds Black Synthetic Thumbhole Stock Brushed Chrome Metal Finish. Does anyone have one? If so what do they think about them? Thanks

1. AMMUNITION. This rifle will accept all .17 HMR ammunition, both 17 and 20-grain bullets. The .17 HMR ammunition is fast and has a very quick peak pressure, meaning it reaches peak chamber pressure very soon after the bullet leaves the case. This peak pressure may also be inconsistent. The variances in peak pressure do NOT affect maximum pressure, safety or accuracy. The ammo shoots extremely well and is all within the SAAMI safety standards. What the variances in peak pressure means is that it is very difficult if not impossible to get this ammunition to function reliably in a traditional "blowback" type gun.
Another characteristic of .17 HMR ammunition is that it burns very dirty. The chamber of the rifle will have to be "dry brushed" regularly to maintain a positive function. Clean the chamber immediately if you experience ejection failures. A 6mm bore brush bent at a 90-degree angle works well for the chamber. The Hoppe's "bore snake" in 17 caliber also works well for bore and chamber cleaning. Remember, if you are having a function issue, clean it! The bore of the barrel should be cleaned with normal solvent and brushes every 200 shots.
2. MLR-1722M .17 HMR OPERATING SYSTEM. Because of the peak pressure variances in the ammunition we looked at alternatives in order to get this excellent cartridge to function reliably in a semi-auto platform. To that end we have developed and have a patent pending unique operating system that combines gas operation with the old blowback operation. We have precisely located a very small orfice hole directly in front of the chamber of this rifle that bleeds a very small amount of expanding gas as the bullet passes it. By doing this we are able to "equalize" the peak pressure of this gun and allow it to operate as a blowback action. We have developed and installed a "gas block" on this rifle that diffuses the gasses safely under the forend. NEVER ALTER OR CHANGE THE ORFICE HOLE IN THIS RIFLE AN UNSAFE CONDITION MAY RESULT. NEVER FIRE THIS RIFLE WITH THE GAS BLOCK NOT TIGHTLY INSTALLED AN UNSAFE CONDITION MAY RESULT.
Repeated firing will require cleaning the dirty black residue from the gas block and barrel around our patented gas block system. To clean, remove the barreled action from the stock. Simple bore solvent and 0000 steel will do the job. DO NOT PLUG THE ORFICE HOLE OR AN UNSAFE CONDITION MAY RESULT.
3. SHOOTING THE MLR-1722M .17 HMR RIFLE. This is an extremely accurate cartridge and rifle and it is very fun to shoot. You may experience a "jam" from time to time and that is a normal semi-auto characteristic. If that happens simply remove the clip, lock the bolt open and clear the jam. Clean the chamber and be sure there are no obstructions in the barrel.
In our testing when we started to see fired cases that failed to eject we cleaned the chamber and were able to continue shooting. Clean rifle barrel at 200 round intervals to maintain accuracy and function. Clean the action as needed.
If the .17 HMR rifle gets excessively hot you may see a fail to extract, (fired case stays in chamber) simply allow the rifle to cool down and you will be able to continue shooting.
