Has anyone ever put any thought into why AR-15's smell funny when you pull the charging handle?

I've been wondering that since '99. As a matter of fact I was just thinking that earlier today. -
The only thing I can guess is the coating on the charging handle is some sort of an epoxy, and it's rubbing off when you charge it. it definitely has something to do with the friction from the anodizing. i've machined anodized parts before and it has that same distinct smell.JustinComment

I noticed this the the other night when pulling the charging handle on mine a few times after a good cleaning. It definitely had a smell to it.Comment
