20+1 of 9mm can "feel" kinda heavy. Probably not as heavy as 10+1 of .45 ACP. Always nice to have the option. My normally carry gun is a Glock 17 with 17+1. No where near as heavy as my steel 1911. Always nice to have the extra capacity and the beauty of it is you don't have to carry the magazine fully loaded. I have some 10 round magazines that I use mostly at the range but when I use those to carry around the house, it's almost like I'm not carry a gun
And as a side note, it's always faster to not have to reload a magazine in a gun fight compared to a 6 round capacity backup gun. I know I know. Who's been in a gun fight here? I just like the size and feel of the grip of a full size gun. Only time I carry a BUG is when riding my bike, trip to the gym, or when going somewhere dressed up and I can't carry a bigger gun (NPE).

A 454 Casull is about as big of a gun as I've shot or would care to carry. And only when camping for a bear gun. As far as what I own, I use a 10mm when camping up in Colorado and New Mexico for protection. And I carry it from time to time here at home.

The Springfield XDMs are great shooting guns. The only thing I find odd about them is they have what I consider to be a machine gun trigger; it reminds me of the one in an FN 240.
You carry an extra magazine and an extra gun in case the magazine in the first gun takes a shit or the first gun itself takes a shit.
I've been in a gunfight with other people shooting at me but I've used a long gun and not a handgun in those circumstances.
I wear a 2X glove and have thick wrists; and even then the 454 Casull is tough on my hands and wrists. I prefer the 41 mag or the 44 Mag for big power handguns but I shoot a hell of a lot more than most people do. The sheer round count probably has affected my preference.Magnus, I am your father. You need to ask your mother about a man named Calvin Klein.
