  • Old long gun shipping question

I've got a couple of old hand-me-down guns from my grand father that aren't worth a whole lot, but they matter to me. One is a little single shot .22 that my gramma used to shoot, that I think is cool as hell.

Anyway, I would like CJ to work his magic (if he's willing), to bring the stocks back to life, and possibly get them firing again. I'll send them to a gunsmith for the internal workins if need be, but I'd at least like to get the stocks back to par.

My question is, what are the shipping laws for such a gun? Both are bolt action, one a Springfield 1896, and the other the aforementioned .22 from the early 1900's. Does them being single-shot effect shipping protocol? Do I need an FFL? I am shipping from California if that matters.

you can ship from yourself to yourself
Pack it yourself call it antiques, ship ground and insured

MAKE SURE YOU PACKAGE IT FOR WAR!!!! Long thin items are likely to be broken!! GET INSURANCE and fight the claim if the carrier says otherwise!!!

<--- Writes shipping software for small parcel. What, exactly, do you want to know?

May make sense to invest in a pelican case to help make sure it stays safe.

Do not, in any way, identify it as anything firearm related. Shipping it next day or second day air would also be better (less likely to get scrutiny, this is what a UPS clerk at a shipping center told me). And as already mentioned, pack it as if you expect it to get run over by a tank.

I would check with the proper authorities and verify that the guns are truely considered to be antiques before shipping them to myself. FFL to FFL transfer would also work. Some brand of hard sided gun case is a must. I had the muzzle end of a heavy rifle come thru the end of case on one trip. I the best long gun shipping container I've seen was a wooden crate with latches but it was heavy.
