  • Taking a gun out of state

Driving/Traveling to Michigan in November...Anyone ever taken a trip out of the state with a concealed gun I'm just not sure if the states I will be driving through have a different laws when it comes to this. Not trying to get my gun taken away in the event I get pulled over and I have to announce that I have my gun with me. Looks like I'm driving through OK, MO, IL and MI. Not sure if I'm making any sense...I don't have a CHL.

    TIA...

Don't do it! at the end of the day you still a messican!!!

I always take mine everywhere, there is probably the same chance they take it from you as chance you might need it. I rather have it just in case.

and if they take it, excuse to buy two more incase one of those gets taken you have a spare

Just check the laws, without a chl I think you have to have the ammo separate from the gun in IL at least.

State law in Illinois will allow you to transport an unloaded weapon without ammunition at the ready. Assuming you can legally own a firearm in your home state that is. However they have a very long list of exceptions to this. Also note that Chicago itself is way more restrictive.

If you are going through Chicago make sure the weapon is unloaded and in a sealed container in the truck or another locked compartment. Also it cannot have any kind of laser targeting system.

Here is a good place to start.. handgunlaw.us

From there click on the states you will be travelling through, and read the information for each state. It should tell you if they provide reciprocity, some general info on carrying with a permit there, and what the rules are for travelling through with a handgun.

Of course the usual disclaimer applies. That said, probably more reliable than anecdotal information you will get here..

              Maybe this might help.

Our Concealed Carry Reciprocity Maps are the most up-to-date CCW maps available. View which states accept your concealed carry permits. Great for traveling.

Learn Gun Laws by State, Hunting Laws by State, Gun Control, Possession and Regulations as well as Rights, federal and state on LAWS.com

I would still visit each states official website to check the current gun laws. Getting your gun confiscated would be the least of your problems compared to getting thrown in jail. I keep thinking of all the people that accidentally carried into NJ and NY and got pulled over in their cars and got arrested.

I think that was the website I was looking for and couldn't find. I'll have to bookmark it now.

I go there anytime I am travelling somewhere new!

And yeah, if I didn't have family in CA I doubt I would ever go back. I do follow their laws when I go there.. I stop just before the CA border to lock up the gun and separate the ammo and do the reverse as soon as I exit the state..

If you want to be real thorough you can call state police in each state you are traveling through and ask, or go to their websites. It's up to you to know the laws in each state.

Avoid the confusion and follow Federal gun transportation laws when going through IL. Which means gun in a locked case, in the trunk, and ammo in a separate case

I'd never go to NY or NJ with a gun. Even if you follow the allowable Federal gun transportation rules, they'll still throw you in jail.

Eventually I want to plan a road/camping trip to California so I'll need to brush up on their gun laws.

Or pocket knife. NY hasn't clearly defined what a gravity knife is and in order to carry one you need a valid hunting or fishing license. Even if it's in your car. Also if the blade is longer than 4 inches it's illegal to carry.

I would check again before going, but as long as it is locked in a case, inaccessible to the driver (trunk), and not with the ammo, you are usually ok. But it has been a while since we've gone and they've likely changed stuff again.

Even then, no mag that can hold more than 10 rounds. And the gun must be on the approved gun list.
