Can you build AR's for the same price or cheaper than the entry level ARs from the big box stores? I have never owned a rifle and looking for a little project. However if I can't save much money then I may just buy one from somewhere.

You can buy kits for less than 400 nowadays. Add a 50 lower and you are hard pressed to buy a cheaper gun. It is when you build it in an image in your head that it will cost more to build than buy, but you get exactly what you want the first time.

Start down the AR road and there will be no money saved. First build leads to a second, the to another caliber, then to a new bolt gun, then reloading, finally a can and or sbr, followed by another can 6 to 9 months after the first one arrived. Then you have a buy a bigger gun safe because the first one isn't big enough so you keep the second one for ammo. The only thing in this whole scenario that actually saves money is reloading, but that is only saved because you started spending so much to begin with on expensive ammo. And then at some point you get bored of the range and look for training classes.
But to answer the original question yes they can be built for really cheap, but they never are. How far do you want to go down the rabbit hole?I don't like Republicans, but I really FUCKING hate Democrats.

I don't expect to go far down the rabbit hole... I like guns but I've never been one to obsessively get into a hobby/activity that is a poor financial decision... My practical side always talks me out of it. Impulse buys are not something that happen often for me.
I'm not super familiar w/ brands so I'm just doing a little research. One of my co-workers bought one new at Wally world for under $500 due to a blemish... can't remember the brand name. He's bought a couple of AR10's here in the last month for 700ish.
I really should have done more research before asking but I'm looking for something simple to build...doesn't need big fancy brand parts...just needs to be reliable.

The new M&P sport is probably the best value right now if you decide building is not for you. It is regularly available for right around $500.

It's not really a poor financial decision. You won't get your money back buying brand new guns and selling them after putting some rounds through them, but you generally won't lose your ass. You can stay even or even get ahead if you look for good used deals and sell at the right timeOriginally posted by BroncojohnnyHOORAY ME and FUCK YOU!

If you only get one AR then I would like to suggest the LE6920, if you watch/wait you can get one under $800 and IMHO well worth it.
Also these triggers are a huge improvement http://www.righttobear.com/Enhanced-...-p/enta-01.htmLast edited by ryuu; 03-05-2016, 09:50 PM.

well I appreciate the feedback. I like the way firearms maintain value.. it's one reason I don't mind making a purchase.
I've started making my blue label glock purchases... so I guess that's what has started me down the rabbit hole...
I just want a super simple AR...no attachments. If I can't build it out the door after taxes for around $400 I'm better off buying one complete.Last edited by akfodysvn; 03-06-2016, 09:23 PM.

I bought my Armalite Ar10T used, then wanted an Ar-15 so I did a complete upper from one of Palmetto State Armory's sales, a blemish lower, and a lower build kit. Then I bought a dedicated 22lr upper which later resulted in a lower to make a complete gun, then I traded for a 7.5" 300 blackout barrel on here which turned into a full 300 blackout pistol build, which then got a Sightmark Photon bought and added to it, and a thunderbeast suppressor. For some stupid reason I decided I wanted to maybe do another ar15 and thankfully a buddy talked some sense into me. No reason to have 2 5.56 guns so I built a 16" 7.62x39 Ar because I have a large amount of ammo in that caliber already. So 5 Ar variants later and I still look at Palmettos specials...... Why you might ask, we'll because you can never have too many guns.
