Reloading .458 Socom

Anybody here done it yet? Just picked up a Rock River Arms AR in .458 to keep on me while out in bear and moose country this spring, but nobody here in Alaska has any of the factory ammo in stock. I can get all the pieces to load my own, but have never tried it before. Looking for any tips I can find.

You picked an expensive cartridge. 45/70 does the same thing and is much, much cheaper. It is straight forward to reload but the components are pricey.

I did finally get to order 80 rounds from SBR, but $250 sucks lol, hopefully it won't be near that to reload. Nash, that is the exact reason I went with it, 10 rounds in a semi-auto, point and pull the trigger till whatever I'm shooting at falls or the rifle goes click.

I would think that has more to do with magazine limitations and that the AR platform is considered a military weapon in a lot of the countries where dangerous game resides and thus illegal to own/operate.

Plus a lot of tradition and it's hard to chamber an AR in .458 Win Mag.

If the platform is good enough for combat, it's reasonable to agree that it's safe to use when hunting a Wildebeest.

I know that but I had a socom and ditched it for a Marlin in 45/70. The socom was nothing but a pain in the ass and it is one of the very few guns that I do not regret selling.

I thought it would be cool to have a .458 SOCOM until I read they are very prone to slam fires. No thanks, I like my house foundation where it's at.

Shouldn't be much to reload. .458" bullet, used case, IMR 4227. I suggest you cast if you plan on a lot of trigger time.

Why would you use 4227 instead of Lil' Gun or H110/Win296?

They're all similar burn rates and interchangable. I use 4227 because I have like 30lbs of it. Whatever you want to use.

The Lil' Gun is the powder I've heard recommended the most. I'll see what I can get my hands on up here. I went ahead and bought 100 pieces of brass, the store Alaska Ammo has the rest of the pieces I need to at least get started. This should give me 150 rounds at any given time. As expensive as it is, don't plan on a ton of trigger time, but would at least like to be able to enjoy it some with the other enthusiast here.
