  • WFAA piece, CCW put to the "test"

National Rifle Association executive vice president Wayne LaPierre made a famous quote following the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School:

“The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."

Many Texans choose to arm themselves, but how prepared are the “good guys” to protect their own families... and even the public? How would they would perform if a “bad guy” with a gun starts shooting?

We retained two experts to help us create an exercise that would put their readiness to the test.

To be consistent you have to practice Regularly, And Know your weapon. If you practice with one but carry a different you wont be as good as you think.

      Looks like a decent test.

Not like that 20/20 thing years ago where they made the people wear gloves and baggy shirts preventing them from getting a clean draw.

All the while they used a SWAT member with 22 years of experience. How often are perpetrators of these types of scenarios experienced like this? I like that most of the good guys won but seems a little skewed to the bad guys favor.

I think there is a pretty big misconception when it comes to concealed carry. An active shooter is an absolute worst case scenario, and engaging an active shooter with a little pop gun is likely to get you killed. Get yourself and yours the fuck out of there and engage only if necessary. I still remember when that guy in Tyler ran into a freaking warzone trying to be a hero and got lit up (which was an avoidable confrontation).

you talking about the shooting at the court house where the lt for the sheriffs department that tried running out the front door while the asshole outside was pumping lead through it with an ak47?

if that is the same one you're talking about he ended up becoming a chief and i worked for him and everyone talked about how brave he was but when i saw the video i thought how dumb he was to try and engage the guy in the manner he did.

I agree with this 100% and I concur that there are misunderstanding about this aspect.

Sadly, this is one of the reasons I hate the public school's "Active Shooter" drills. Gather up in damned classrooms and wait it out bullshit. I'll keep it at that to avoid derailing the thread.

                          This guy:

Private citizen who got hero syndrome and got killed.
Call me crazy, but engaging an active shooter with a long gun (clad in body armor) when you dont need to is foolish.

Agreed. The only reason I got my CHL was to be able to protect my wife and now my son. I'm not there to play Sheriff Rick Grimes and protect the flock. If my wife and son are safe, I'm outta there....unless it's something crazy like I see a guy walking with an AK into an elementary school. I can't imagine walking away from something like that.

I'm not stopping a 7-eleven hold up, or a bank robbery or anything like that. That's what insurance is for.

Its a better test than the previous reinactment where they made the ccw people wear gloves.
And yes, gtfo if possible. Always better to be a living witness.
