  • Rhino Iron works safes

I love the looks of these and they really seem to be a quality piece. They are also about 3x the cost of one of the cheapies of the same size. IN my house I really want to put the safe in an office area where it will not necessarily be out in the open but would be to anyone entering that room. The aesthetics of it are pleasing to me.

    Opinions?

Honestly for a little more you can get a lot higher quality safe. The break point is around 2800. A proper fire rating has two components. Temperature and time. Whenever they advertise just the time, beware. Do you have any better specs?

Thanks for chiming in, it appears that they have 2 levels of this safe, little bit of the differences can be seen here...

      http://www.rhinosafe.com/rhino-ironw...upreme-series/

The one I linked to is the lesser of the two styles and from what i can tell on their site it is rated for 75 minutes at 1200 and the better one is 90 minutes at 1200

My Champion Trophy 60 is rated for 75 minutes at 1500, for example.

I picked up a used model at The Safe Company in Garland for $2800 with tax, for reference, and from what I'm seeing it's a lot bigger than the rhino safe. The rhino has an impressive 1/4" thick plate front door, which certainly sounds good, but the problem is it has 12 gauge everything else. And trust me, if people have the time, they're not going through the door. They're going through the side. For comparison the trophy has a 1/4" steel plate door as well, but 11 gauge everything else. I think the rhino looks decent for the price, but for a little more you can get a hell of a lot bigger safe.

hehe, these safe discussions are like every other discussion with a lot of opinions. You do get what you pay for though - generally.

Although at the safe place in garland, when I've been there I saw a couple extremely high dollar safes compromised.

Meaning, with time folks can get past anything. You have to decide what the cost is worth vs quality...blah blah blah. Also, I noted when shopping that some places sell safes that are built similar to "cheap" safes but have nicer paint...etc - then charge a ton more for it. You have to decide if nice paint/appearance is worth the cost to you. Based off the safe your posting, I suspect you are concern with looks and are going for a specific look. (old bank vaultish )

I'd recommend reading a lot and watching videos to make your own opinions.

Also, I think on this specific forum there were a few threads years ago that went on a bit. Folks discussing features, cost and all that.

The one thing everyone agrees with though, is buy as big as you can afford - do not buy just enough.

Also, if you decide on lower end safes - check out sams and costco. You'll pay about 3-500 more at a safe company for a similar safe.

I'm sure it has been posted before, but this is a pretty informative video regarding safes. He even discuss the Rhino safes as well.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't really looking for that style but after I found it I can't stop looking at it. I love the steam punk look to it. I will not purchase based solely on looks. Function outweighs form on this one.

I ended up with the Amsec BF7240 with the 4ga liner in a platinum gloss finish. I have no doubt it can be opened but hopefully it would take a few minutes longer.

Unless it's the safe company, where you can buy used safes, and pay considerably less.

That was a good point about the paint. I should also mention the $2,800 tag I quoted was for their top of the line paint, you can knock off $500 by going with a cheaper finish. Generally, one of the hardest things I've always found when buying safes is understanding what a good deal is, and what you should expect for your money. You can save a few grand by buying a used safe.

                              Good question.

This is just my opinion with a story.

I know a guy who is not quite DFWBaller, but dang close. He had some safe that cost about 15K in his garage (I do not remember any details on make/model). The story goes that they would replace anything in it if damaged by fire.

There was a house fire that spread to the garage and most things had to be replaced. The company made good on it, but if you have a family rifle or something - it maybe worth 100 bucks or 100K - but you'd rather it not be damaged.

That's what swung me towards just a safe and try to keep it on or close to an exterior wall (in my mind, that may make a difference). I've also had great ideas of encasing it in drywall and crap...still sits there as-is for the last 4 years.

I personally feel like there is not enough data around these things. Also, if I remember right - there was no real standards around these ratings either. That's why what CJ mentioned about temp with fire rating is important - but I'm not even sure they really test them. As I understand it could be a theoretical rating...or what SHOULD be true.

However, a safe could have 100 hour fire rating - from a bic lighter if they don't say anything about temp.

Anyway...rambled a bit. I suppose the summary is still you get what you pay for there....but from a person I trust even a good or above average safe does not provide any guarantees.
