At the end of their recent legislative session, Texas lawmakers passed Senate Bill 11, which is known as “campus carry.”

The final version of the legislation allows private Texas colleges and universities to opt out of its requirement and to continue to ban weapons, in consultation with their campus communities.

SMU has been a weapons-free campus by policy since at least 1994. University Policy 10.5, which prohibits the possession of any dangerous weapon on SMU property, remains in full force and is not affected by this legislation. You can read the policy online in the University Policy Manual.

If the campus carry bill is signed into law, SMU will follow the process it outlines to consult with faculty, staff and students about opting out. I appreciate the questions and concerns many of you have raised on this issue and look forward to continuing this conversation in the months ahead.

This new legislation includes the benefit of exercising local control, and we will use that control to continue to do everything we can to provide a safe and secure environment for our students, faculty, staff and visitors.

While passage of the law is not what we had hoped for, we are now reviewing the legislation thoroughly to ensure that we fully understand our latitude in developing regulations for carrying concealed handguns on campus.

We will spend our time prior to Fall 2016 planning our implementation response, and consulting with all faculty, staff and students who have interest in or have raised concerns about this legislation.

I also will consult extensively with other campus leaders and police groups in Texas to better understand the additional costs and training associated with this bill. And, I will ask our police department and other units on campus to provide training and guidance to our community to help them understand how to personally respond in this new environment.

In the coming year, we will conduct a thorough and thoughtful process, and I assure all of our students and their families, faculty and staff members, and visitors that we remain committed to providing the best educational experience in Texas in a safe campus community.

Stats say differently. A majority of college crime is committed off campus and there is a greater chance of an encounter in the high school levels.

Have a buddy that is a prof at TWU, and I razzed him about the other prof that was in fear of threats for grades. He's all, so am I! Like really?? I challenged him to find me how many students in Utah and Colorado have threatened teachers for higher grades.

I have been carrying on campus at every school that I have attended since becoming a young adult. Concealed carry in MI was a felony when I was there so I got a part time job at the Kalamazoo county sheriff's dept as a dog handler and that made it legal for me to carry in the whole state. Other then when I was up there I have never let a law against CC prevent me from carrying; even on a recent trip to NYC.

Cause, you know. Once the gun is brandished, its been seen. And because of that fact, the teacher can't possibly ever wait until the student is gone, and call the police. Because that would be against the laws of physics, it just can't happen.

For suggesting such retardery, I demand that ever prof. stupid enough to suggest it, be stripped of all qualifications and achievements, because they're obviously in no shape to be teaching anyone anything.
