  • what do you all know about night vision??

I'm looking for some binoculars, where is the cheapest place to buy, and what brand?

It's expensive and you get what you pay for. The cheapest is usually the shittiest.

Cheapest place would be any toy store...

What will they be used for, how far do you expect to be able to see, and how much do you want to spend?

Cheap and night vision don't go in the same sentence. You can get some early gen Russian stuff for cheap, that's what's usually sold at Walmart and other places just repackaged and sold here. Sure, you can see somewhat in the dark with it, but once you use something like a PVS7/14 you'll realize how awful the cheap stuff really is.

What are you looking to use it for?

Whatever you do, don't get gen1 or gen1+. It's like getting sand in your eye.

I assume these are all uncooled thermal sites? You're only going to get so much quality being uncooled.

I work on a cooled thermal sight with a min "recognizable" range of 5000m.

I will be working in a rural area where night vision/thermal could be useful.

In that case, skip night vision and just put a WISTI on your truck. You can thank me later.

I'm not a fan of dedicated magnified night vision as it's useless if you ever want to use it up close. A platform that can accept a magnified lens is nice though. A decent PVS you're looking at starting around a couple grand. You stalk CL and other sites/forums and find a decent deal from time to time, but often times the cheap units have the good'ole "property of US govt" seal of approval on them.

As for thermal, now you're really talking some money. The only semi way of doing a cheap thermal unit is finding a Cadillac unit on eBay and then you still have to supply power and a screen.

There is no cheap way with good night vision, you either get cheap junk, or pay to play.

Rockauto had the Cadi sensors last time I looked; they were not that expensive.

If you're going high end, it might be a good idea to rent the ones you're looking at.
