There’s a reason some of the loudest activists want Texas to do away with handgun licenses. Their past crimes mean they can’t get one.
We got into a heated debate over this issue when he recognized me at a gun show a few weeks back, and he proceeded to tell me that "it's people like you that keep me from protecting my family by not allowing me to possess and carry a firearm."
There's no rationalizing with folks this ignorant. They think they're entitled to what others work hard to keep, maintaining their responsibilities, and preserve the privilege by not making bad decisions. I then proceeded to tell him he's the reason my car insurance isn't cheaper.

The way I see it, if you served your prison term and have been released then that means you have been rehabilitated. If you have not been 100% rehabilitated, then that means our prison system does not work and should be fixed. I am all for punishment for crimes, but I believe that debts to society should be paid in full and upon release we should consider them paid. All rights should get reinstated after probation and your adjustment back into society; I am all for making sure you adjust, get a job, and are free of drugs and alcohol and meet with an officer for while after release. After that is done then voting, gun rights, and all else should be returned to you. Now, that also means that sentences need to be served to completion, probably no early release, and very strict sentences for repeat offenders. A large part of the problem with our prison system is no one ever fully repays their debt; that crime and stigma is always held over them. I think the crime should always show up on their record so police know who is a repeat offender if it comes up again, but overall if you committed a crime and served the sentence, then you either are 100% ready to be back in society or you aren't. There is no in between. If I cannot trust you with a gun after prison, then you should not be out of prison. Anyway, that is my 2 cents on the subject, and Kory Watkins is still a no talent ass-clown.

A good example of how kory ass clown is being more of a nuisance to gun rights than a voice of solutions. Bout halfway down he posts screen shots of a back and forth between him and a state rep. The state rep even tells him he is hindering the process, but kory "the fedora" watkins is too dillusional to hear what is being said.sigpic

Originally posted by LANTIRN View PostThey shouldn't have to petition. Get out of prison, get rights back automatically after completing probation. You have either paid your debt and are ready to be back in society, or you aren't. I do believe our punishments for alot of crimes should be stiffer, and less for others, while others like pot should not even be illegal, but all that is another discussion. As for the recidivism rates, I don't know the numbers but it is high. I believe people can turn around, but I also think we need tougher sentencing. Hell for crimes like rape and child molestation we barely have any jail time, it seems, and I think that is largely due to early parole. I would rather see set times, like if you get sentenced to 30 years, you serve 30 years, not 5 and then out on good behavior. I am no expert on prison having never been or work in one, but it does seem a large problem to me is people not serving their sentences, and others who seem to be treated like a criminal after release. I think there is vast room for improvement in the system. I do believe people can and do rehabilitate. Shit happens, people make mistakes, lets pay it back, fix the problem, and move on if possible. Maybe life without parole for a repeat offender? I don't necessarily have the solution, but I know it isn't what we are doing now.
