  • Putting the gun hobby on hold for a while

I will still be posting, shooting and reloading, but it looks like the gun buying goes on hold for the next two years. The wife has given me permission to build my dream car: an FFR Cobra Mk IV. It's going to take all my gun money and then some....

If I fall in love with the VP9, I guess I will have to sell my XDM to get one.

Congrats on the next money sucking adventure. A FFR has always been a dream of mine
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

Congrats! Trust me your gun hobby won't be on hold for long. Let me know if you need any help or questions along the way. I don't even mind bringing mine over and help with some labor. Have you placed you order yet? You going base or complete kit?

I know there's a lot to be said about building it yourself, but I think I would just buy a backdraft and drop in a coyote

Have you looked into the FFR build school ? I thought about doing it this summer.

Yes I've thought about build school. I'm going to order my kit this fall/winter and watch their website for best deals. I know once in a while they have a great sale. I'm looking for a Dec/Jan delivery.

Right now I have to get my donor car set up like I want with all of the mods I want in place. I'm going to build a mild GT40P engine setup, remove all the smog, install Cobra brakes all around, maybe gears too and get it all tuned. Then I will tear it all apart to install in the kit. I'm going to have one of the best running but ugliest '94 GTs the world has ever seen. Then I'm going to keep all the cool parts for the donor. I'm planning on keeping power steering, ABS, setting up the clutch to be hydraulic, and a lot of other things.

I also ordered specific paint codes and a 1/24 model today to start testing paint schemes. What I have in mind I have never seen on a Cobra nor do I want what anyone else has.

I'm probably going to start a build thread to show everyone what I'm up to. It'll be about 9 months of donor work / prep. It will be getting a new clutch and flywheel rather quickly as the throwout bearing screams. I have my GT40p heads, but I need to upgrade the valve springs. Then I will find a cam and Explorer intake and rip out all the EGR stuff. I'm going to use my 15 year old son as labor and use this to teach him all about cars.

01yz, I definitely plan to see your car in the next month or two so I can see how I fit in it and ride around in it.

My wife has options she wants like A/C, heated seats, and all that are really going to drive my build cost up.

With my job, 1.5 years of bonuses should get it done though. Next bonus comes in April. That one will square away the donor with all I want to do to it, and make my kit downpayment if I want to order that soon. I need to call FFR and check on lead times. If not, I will put the downpayment with the August bonus. The Christmas / end of year is always enough to pay the rest of the kit off.

I'm going with the base kit. I'm going to do a lot of things that the full kit won't benefit me much on. I'm also a cheap bastard.

One thing radically different from 01yz's build will be my use of 17" wheels and tires and ABS. The hydraulic clutch is expensive too, but I'm sick of the cable driven ones. I really liked driving my '13 Coyote 5.0 GT more than any previous generation. If it wouldn't add another $6-8K to my build cost I'd go Coyote 5.0.

If you're not already, join FFCars.com
Lots of great info over there, not sure I would have made it through without it.

Geez your gun habit must be crazy if it cost as much as an upper end car. Evidently its not a budget friendly hobby either

Good call on the hydraulic clutch. Looks like I'm gonna make the switch. I've had it with this cable quadrant set up. I'm broke in the cabelas parking lot as I type. Second time this quadrant has left me stranded. 😡

The McLeod setup is expensive, but I'm probably going to bite the bullet on it anyway. I really loved the clutch in my '13 GT and Audi S cars compared to my old 5.0s with the quadrant and cable.

This car also needs to be wife friendly, so....

I don't know why Ford didn't adopt hydraulic clutches sooner. They had one in the '87/8 T bird turbo coupes... why not the Mustang too?

yea, after looking at the differences in the different models it seems like backdraft didnt have the problems that other replicas were having. Like cracks around the 'roll bars', windshield, and mirrors (I have seen some though), another 'feature' is that they have the exhaust exiting a little farther back (Its so easy to burn legs in the cobras)
