Hunting Rifle recommendations

So, grew up using and shooting my dad's Remington .270, so kinda partial to that, but I figure it's about time to get my own.

Any favorites and recommendations? Looking for deer mainly, bolt action, magazine fed (3-4 rounds), and with glass, trying to target $800 or less.

Just wants y'all thoughts to start mulling over.

I am very picky with my hunting rifles and there are a number of "musts" I require:


-One piece steel bolt for strength and durability
-Cocks on opening the bolt to take advantage of the superior leverage
-One piece firing pin for strength and positive ignition
-Recoil lug integral with (machined as part of) the receiver
-Design that routes explosion away from face in the event of a rupture
-Hinged magazine floorplate.
-Large loading/ejection port that facilitates loading cartridges from the top
-Short bolt rotation (less than 90 degrees)
-Full length (Mauser style) extractor for controlled feeding
-Convenient, external bolt release (not the trigger!)
-Three position safety

x2. I Love mine. Chambered in 7mm Rem-Mag.

All I added was a sling, Bi-pod, and my scope is a Nikon Pro-Staff BDC. It's dead accurate.

Have had mine for years and it is still as accurate as the day I bought it.
Great triggers, (Remington triggers suck) Smoothest action of any rifle in its price range, excellent trigger, very accurate!!!

I am also trying to decide myself after letting my 700 BDL go the other year. Have been eyeing the Winchester M 70, either the Supergrade or the featherweight. But they are pricey.

I have a Browning X-bolt and enjoy it I also am a fan of the Tikka's. I would've bought that one if I did not find a used X-bolt with scope for a good price. However, I also have a Mossberg ATR that is a el-cheapo rifle and love it too.

As far as caliber - I use 30-06 for nostalgia purposes and it's what my family up north hunts with so ammo is easier to stock. I don't think you can go wrong with 308 - I know some dudes who bought 270s, but ended up with 308s. With shot placement though, I think you'd do alright with any of the 3 calibers.

270 and 30-06 will be long action and the 308 a short. For most practical purposes in factory ammo the 30-06 doesn't offer much advantage unless you are shooting really heavy pills.

Personally I prefer a short action. With modern gunpowder, I don't see the need for the larger case of the 270/30-06. With a very few exceptions, a .308 will do everything a 30-06 will. Same goes for 7-08 vs a .270.
