  • Proper Break In for AR?

So my last two rifles (AR and a Savage) I bought used so I didn't bother following any sort of break in procedure. But I want to make sure I do that with the new AR I picked up this week and wanted to get some opinions from people on here how to do so. I did some research on YouTube and a couple of the video's were talking about cleaning the barrel out after every shot for the first few (20-100) rounds. Is this excessive?

I'm certainly no expert but that sounds excessive to me.

Man, if you are telling me that full auto mag dumps are bad for a new barrel then I have been doing something very wrong!

Granted I'm not an "expert" by anyone's standards but that seems ridiculous to me. In the navy I got a brand new m16a3 once out if the crate and proceeded to put 200 rounds through it no issue. My new Colt LE like your I put 100 through it each of the times I've had it at the range no issues.

Drive it like you stole it......

I will agree 90% with above. If you bought something with a quality barrel trying to squeeze out sub 1" moa, then use a break in procedure. Otherwise, punch the bore a few times, lube it, and shoot it. Clean it afterwards and repeat. After a while some of mine get shot and not even cleaned anymore other than a basic wipe down. My more expensive ones get a little more detail cleaning.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

If the barrel costs less than $500 just begin normal use.

Proper break-in for a normal AR barrel is like proper cleaning of an AK.

They are both exercises in futility.

                              Fantastic advise.

I shoot new guns until I can not touch the barrel without getting burnt. Let it cool off, clean, repeat.
