  • ar15 optics

im new to the ar15 world..i know way behind the times. my rifle will be finished up this weekend hopefully. so now im looking into optics. ive youtube'd myself crazy trying to see what i like.

i have a lead on a NIB trijicon acog i can pickup for $950. or a aimpoint pro for $400. i know both of these are great optics, with the acog being 4x magnified. but im also seeing good reviews on vortex strikefire and primary arms red dots.

my question about the non-magnified optics. how far out can you shoot with them accurately? if im shooting 100+ yards would there be much help by getting a 3x magnifier such as the primary arms one? or is the acog the holy grail and way to go?

i will mainly be plinking targets, but the occasional hog hunts...and god forbid SHTF one day.

looking for some learning from you guys. thanks in advance.

Acog, red dots are fine but acog is the way I would go.

I don't have any experience with ACOG, but I was hitting steel plates @ 300 yards with an Aimpoint T-1. I had a 3X magnifier with me during the rifle class but never even bothered to put it on.

Is acog really worth an extra 400-600 depending on what red dot combo i went with?

If you go ACOG, get the chevron, not the circle. Easier to read the sight at the varying distances, IMO.

I'm more than happy with my Aimpoint M4. Good "tactical" hits at 100 and 200 yds, easy, and ringing steel at 400 yards.

I'm probably opposite of most and feel thatca 1-4 power scope is one of the best options on a ar platform for versatility.

i have no idea how people can hit small targets accurately past 100 yds with a 1x red dot. the dot, circle, crosshair/etc covers the target completely. i love my red dot for close range up to 50-75 yrds but i plan on getting a 3x magnifier for 100+ yd shooting.

I'd buy the primary arms scope in the classifieds. If you haven't shot a red dot, do it before buying, I bought a primary arms red dot and it was fuzzy as hell, I thought it was the red dot itself, I went and looked through some aimpoints at cabelas, they were all fuzzy. I have astigmatism, it's not bad enough I have to wear glasses, but enough to make the dot look like shit. I have a primary arms 1-4x and on 1 with the dot illuminated it looks 10 times better, I will never buy another non magnified optic, I think it's a complete waste of money, just my personal experience. I do like acogs, I just think they are expensive as fuck, and if your not going into combat and treating your weapon as such, it's overkill. Buy a nice 4x prism scope, Burris and vortex and primary arms all make fixed power scopes that for 90% of people will work just as well as an acog.

My Aimpoint T1 is 2 MOA, which covers 6" @ 300 yards. It is not meant to be a precision optic, but there is no problem hitting 10" steel plates @ 300 yards.

I have a Mepro 21 on my AR and I like it a lot. Fuck batteries! I use the tip of the triangle for precision shooting and the whole triangle for up close and personal.
