  • Thinking about the Cannon safe from TSC on Black Friday for $699

I'm running out of room in my first safe, its a Winchester Ranger. I want to step up but still on a budget. The Cannon 48 gun safe at Tractor Supply for Black Friday caught my eye for $699. I tried to see what sort of professional reviews (i.e. NOT Guns and Ammo) were out there for it and can't find much. All of the other Cannon safes from other non-"budget" stores seem to have different model numbers which leads me to believe this is either re-branded or a specific build for TSC. It doesn't even look like this model is listed on Cannon's site.

What sort of drawbacks should I expect in a safe like this? The one I would be upgrading from is identical to their one on sale for $550 for Black Friday, just Winchester Ranger branded. Honestly I'd prefer a dial lock over a keypad but I think that may be out of my price range. The safe I have claims it will hold 24 guns, which might be true if I had 24 break action rifles or shotguns, but anything with a scope or bolt handle drops that number drastically. I had eyed the Franklin safes but one with the space comparable to the Cannon is more than 3x the price. What does that really buy me?

Ia planning on trying to snag one of tbe winchesters they will have for $550. It will fit my needs for a while, and I feel it is a little more secure. It has larger diameter locking bolts, and more of them.

That's exactly the one I have and it's great other than I'm running out of room. It almost seems like the Cannon is a step down from the Winchester other than size.

I keep looking at safes and feel anything short of a tl30x6 is wasting money. But then again I guess a budget safe is good for my High Point 9mm.

Fair point. Someone on another board put it simply as most of us would spend more on a single rifle scope than a safe. Makes sense. Seems I should reevaluate my decisions for safes and up the budget a bit.

I have a cannon and it has been fine, and they have a good warranty though I never had to use it. My only complaint is mine is electronic instead of dial and I just worry about it breaking eventually as all electronics tend to do.

Same, I think mine was supposed to be a 28 gun or so, got it earlier this year from Sams Club for like $699 I think. I still like it, and it's a metric shit ton better than the safe I never had before I got it.

Might as well put a lock on a closet door. About the same amount of protection.

Not sure where you guys are living, or what you are posting to facebook, but I don't see much oceans 11 shit going on in my neck of the woods. I think that 99% of us probably don't need to guard against much more than a smash and grab. Limit access to the safe, and in most instances you will be alright.

Thats how I'm starting to feel after looking into more of these "safes". Even the Ft Knox models have 10ga steel which is roughly 1/8" thick. Almost like anything thats worth it has a price tag starting at 3500 and thats for a tiny one.

I picked up a big Cannon on black friday at Academy a few years ago. For the price there is nothing wrong with them, just be sure and bolt them down, it is a lot harder to pry one open if you can't push it over as easy. My biggest complaint is the internal hinges, which make it to where the door only opens 90 degrees. When I build a house at some point in the future I plan on upgrading to a big boy safe like Ft Knox.

Yeah, if you want a safe to protect against a determined thief - that's one thing.

If you want a safe to keep the honest - honest and keep kids out, these level of safes are fine. I'd not consider any in this level fireproof though. They may hold up against a little heat, but any real fire and anything inside is fubar.

I'm not sure if it'll be effective, but I have the smaller fireproof boxes that I put in my safe for papers..etc.

I have an Amsec that I purchased earlier this year and love it. Yeah, it cost just under $800, but it's super heavy, lots of locking bolts and will keep random B&E's from making off with my firearm stuff.

If someone cases me, and knows my timetables, then the safe won't hold up for long.

I bought a Stack-on Total Defense 54 Gun Safe on sale earlier this year from WalMart. Price was $898 with free delivery. As a bonus its waterproof and comes with a door hanger. Very happy with the size and I'd definitely buy it again. Walmart seems to throw one of this line on sale every 3 weeks or so, just have to watch for it.

Here is a lower end model black Friday deal that might work for you:

Went and looked at AmSec, Superior, Browning and Fort Knox today. The BF7240 with a 4ga inner shell looks to be pretty stout. Fort Knox is 50% off on adding the steel upgrades right now. I also want redundant locks.
