  • How do you "car" carry?

I thought this had been discussed before but I searched (maybe not good enough) and didn't find anything. So I read the Dallas Morning News Crime Blog and came across a story of a guy that was robbed at gun point while sitting at a red light in his car a couple of miles away from my home.

Been hearing a lot of this lately it seems and I had to stop and think of how I carry while seated in my car and it's always in my holster at the 3 o'clock position. I always say that situational awareness is the key to surviving an encounter like this but the more I think about it the more I feel that I may need to change my mode of carry while in the car. There is simply to much time wasted trying to draw from a seated position. Step 1, unbuckle seat belt. Step 2, lift shirt. Step 3, turn slightly to the left to free up my gun that is covered by the center console and the seat. Finally. Step 4, draw weapon. If I practiced (and I haven't) I'm thinking at least 3 seconds to complete this and I wouldn't be able to hide the fact from whoever is knocking on my window.

The only thing I can think of is to either unholster my gun before sitting down and keep it handy somewhere. The times I've done this before hand are situations like hitting up the ATM late at night and there being a line of cars ahead and behind me. Usually I'll tuck it unholstered in my small of back, in my lap (which could be dangerous if I'm rear ended/bumped), or in the passenger seat strategically covered up by something but still easy to get to. The only thing I can think of is to carry a second gun. Preferably something small and light that I can "whip" out real quick.

But is this paranoia on my part or do you guys think the same? How do you carry differently (if it all) while sitting in your car???

It's funny, I actually think about this when buying cars. My '13 GT had a huge center console. It would swallow up almost any pistol I own. Right now my Audi it's a bit tighter. The center console has an XDM compact in condition 1. It's sitting in there so that if I open the console I can grab it easily and be firing one handed. My XDS will obviously fit in there just as well. I also keep a fully loaded spare mag handy too. I have a get home bag in my trunk with another spare mag and a small assortment of survival gear too. I can grab the XDM get home bag and hoof it home if necessary from work.

I also almost always have a my carry knife in my right front pocket too, right where I keep my money clip.

I take mine out of my pocket or holster and fit it between my seat and the middle seat/console. It doesn't do me any good in my pocket.

Mines in the center flip up console of my chevy.
It would be incredibly convenient stuffed between the driver seat and the center seat, although not at all concealed.
Sure it's not the best spot, But i'd like to think I could see someone approaching my vehicle and have time to react.

Mine is normally sitting out of its holster in the console of my Grand National and my truck so that all I have to do is open the lid and grab it. On my bike I normally keep it in the right jacket pocket out of the holster although using it effectively would be challenging due to gloves.

Center console holster. If I'm heading into shady areas, it rides in the side cubby of the console for easy access.

The car is one of the only places I can carry right now. I've found that I like appendix. I can pull the shirt over the gun and the seat belt rides on the holster. I'm gonna get hurt if I get into an accident. But all I have to do is clear the shirt and I have access.

Door pocket, koozy keeps the holster in place when I pull it out.

I stick mine between the seat and console in my truck if I'm someplace shady. Being right handed it would be more awkward trying to get it from the door pocket in a hurry than it would to keep it in my carry position about 4 o'clock. I can also get it from carry portion if I had to without having to unbuckle just not as fast.

I wish I could say i haven't done that. I mean that exactly. Possibly right down to the same koozie!

                          God bless.

In my pocket if it's the Baby Glock or Sig 9. Anything bigger I just stick in the center console.

Door, as stated above. The Lincoln doesn't have a door pocket, so I just jam it between the front seat and console. Magazine facing forward (since I'm left handed).
