Beretta Taking $45 Million Investment, 300 Jobs to Tennessee Over Fear of Gun Control

    Jul. 22, 2014 3:51pm Jason Howerton

Beretta U.S.A. Corp. announced on Tuesday that it plans to move its entire U.S. manufacturing operation from its current location in Accokeek, Maryland, to Gallatin, Tennessee, due to a fear of gun control legislation that may pass the Maryland Legislature in the future.

“During the legislative session in Maryland that resulted in passage of the Firearm Safety Act of 2013, the version of the statute that passed the Maryland Senate would have prohibited Beretta U.S.A. from being able to manufacture, store or even import into the State products that we sell to customers throughout the United States and around the world,” Beretta General Manager Jeff Cooper said in a statement.

“While we were able in the Maryland House of Delegates to reverse some of those obstructive provisions, the possibility that such restrictions might be reinstated in the future leaves us very worried about the wisdom of maintaining a firearm manufacturing factory in the State,” he added.

Cooper said the gun manufacturer initially planned to use the new Tennessee facility only for new equipment and production of new product lines, but the company decided that it is “more prudent from the point of view of our future welfare” to move the full manufacturing operation to the new facility.

The new Beretta facility in Gallatin, Tennessee, is scheduled to be opened in mid-2015. Beretta U.S.A. is expecting the new location to involve a $45 million investment in building and equipment as well as the hiring of around 300 employees in the new few years.

“Administrative and executive support functions” will remain at the Accokeek, Maryland, facility.

Good for them! Wish we could have persuaded them to move to Texas though.

America’s largest shotgun manufacturer, O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc., decided not to expand in Connecticut. Sure it was founded there 1919 and still has its corporate headquarters in North Haven. But in 2013 Connecticut rushed through legislation to ban some of Mossberg’s popular products. As a result, Mossberg CEO, Iver Mossberg, says, “Investing in Texas was an easy decision. It’s a state that is not only committed to economic growth but also honors and respects the Second Amendment and the firearm freedoms it guarantees for our customers.”

Mossberg has instead expanded its Maverick Arms, Inc. facility in Eagle Pass, Texas, with 116,000 new square-feet of factory space. Mossberg is not a small gun manufacturer. According to records kept by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Mossberg made 475,364 guns in America in 2011. Of those guns, a total of 423,570 were shotguns made for sportsmen, for shotgun sports enthusiasts, for law-enforcement and for people who want a shotgun to protect their homes and families.

More than 90 percent of Mossberg’s guns are now made in Texas. Some of its Connecticut jobs are going there, too. Tom Taylor, O.F. Mossberg & Sons’ senior vice president, sales & marketing, tells me, “We’re moving all wood gun stock production to our Texas facility. More of our product lines—like our modern sporting rifles—might move to Texas in the future. Texas has been very good to us. Also, our gun sales have been so dynamic over the last number of years. We’ve outgrown our facilities. This major expansion will help us keep up with demand.”

Mossberg is America’s oldest family owned and operated firearms manufacturer. It’s also the largest pump-action shotgun manufacturer in the world. Texas Governor Rick Perry (R) has been aggressively coaxing them to bring even more jobs to Texas—Mossberg has been making guns there since 1989. Perry has been seducing them with the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF), the state’s low taxes, simpler regulations and a skilled workforce.

          Beretta

Beretta should move everything to Tennessee. If the executives do not want to leave Yankee Land, get some new ones.

Yup. One of the main reasons the South lost round 1 was because almost all manufacturing capacity was in the north.

With the way northern states, aside from flyover country, are scaring away business, it could very well go our next if there's ever a round 2.

Not to mention the fact that the populace is vastly better and more thoroughly armed.

I don't see it being north vs south this time around though. Even dem states are heavily populated with conservatives or at least folks who strongly disagree with the way things are going.

Yup, I was very surprised at the kind of turn outs they had in Albany, NY to protest their new gun laws. There is NYC and then the rest of New York State, which is much more moderate to conservative leaning.

Just like CA...etc...etc. Out in the rural areas/country they are no different than here. They bust their ass working, generally don't rely on the government and expect others to do the same.
