  • skeet shooting

I went for the first time today. I only had time for a few shots but I think I found a New addiction. Now I need a shotgun. Any suggestions. I don't want to spend a bunch on a first.

1100 if were talking true skeet. If just shooting clay pigeons then a 870 or 500 is a good option.

Over under if purely for skeet.

I tear it up with a cheap stoeger M2000. It's worked great thus far.

Were you shooting an auto loader or pump? If it was an auto loader, it will be hard to go to a pump. Pumps are cheap though and will still be plenty of fun for a first shotgun. I used a Mossberg 500 pump for a while until I was ready to upgrade to an auto loader. Now the pump serves as a home defense gun.

If you're on a budget, IMO, a Mossberg 500 pump or if you have to have an auto, then a Stoeger m2000. I have the Stoeger m3500 and love it.

I was thinking the mossberg 500. We were just using the hand tossed one's. I used a pump today but figure a pump can also work for home use also.

you were most likely shooting trap then, not skeet.

I have over 1000 rounds through mine and haven't had any problems with it...definitely a great starter gun that will still outlast me.

                          686 Silver Pigeon

But i'm biased.. And I've never used a pump in the fields.

Browning Maxus is another good one, never owned it but shot one a few times and like it better than the Silver Pigeon.
You remember the stories John use to tell us about the the three chinamen playing Fantan? This guy runs up to them and says, "Hey, the world's coming to an end!" and the first one says, "Well, I best go to the mission and pray," and the second one says, "Well, hell, I'm gonna go and buy me a case of Mezcal and six whores," and the third one says "Well, I'm gonna finish the game." I shall finish the game, Doc.

Any suggestions for a good auto loader for hunting? I would like to keep it under a grand.

My preferred one is an old Model 12 or Super X-1.
