I know a decent amount about internal ballistics. To cause problems like you are describing you have to have malfunction somewhere be it wrong bullet diameter or bore/grove diameter. The more I read I wonder if you had a micro groove marlin as they put out more than a few with bad bores. I could possibly see that but even then it's a stretch.

The only malfunction is selecting the wrong ammo. I can duplicate this with any .38/.357 rifle that you hand me.

Can you list some of your load data that this has happened with? I'm curious just how light of a load you're using for this to happen,

ammo that you buy at walmart is loaded pretty weakly
So Remington ammo from Bass Pro is ok? Walmart = not ok?

If I ever pick one of these rifles up again I will post the test on you tube.

I can't post load data because it is factory ammo that will cause the malfunction. I have never had a problem with my own loads. What ever Winchester loads their white box 130gr FMJ target ammo to is what the spec is.

Ok. Regardless of this. I still want one. So keep ur eyes pealed for a good deal on a 357 lever.

The only rifle in pistol caliber that appeals to me is the good old fashioned Thompson..... I'd love to have one.

I'd love to have a caliber matched set of single action and lever action. Preferably in 45lc. But my FIL's marlin in 41mag is a tack driver out to 170 yards. Respectable for a pistol cartridge

Everything I've seen contradicts what you are saying. This link compares .357 Mag velocities between 6" pistol and 20" rifle. Rifle is 400-800 fps higher velocity for all the rounds tested.

Your argument about friction stopping the bullet also does not take into consideration that there is still pressure behind the bullet pushing it out in a longer barrel, albeit the pressure drops as the bullet gets to the end of a long barrel. This guy also tested 20" vs 24" barrel on a Marlin 92. Velocity loss was 20 fps per inch with high pressure loads. I'd agree that with lower pressure loads you would see more velocity loss per length after max velocity is achieved in the barrel, but that still isn't going to stop the bullet.

I believe that you experienced what you are saying, but there has to be something else to explain it. Ballistics just don't back up your statement. The fact that nobody else on the internet seems to be complaining should tell you that something else was going on.

Also, if this was a real problem you would hear about people blowing up 9mm ARs all the time because decreased case volume and faster burning powders compared to Magnum pistol cartridges should make the effect you are talking about even more dramatic.

                                ^^^^^

I have been talking about using mild .38spl loads. The issue I am referencing to doesn't happen with .357mag loads.
