Open carry supporters – I have a question for you

I agree that the guys in that other thread are a very terrible example of how to go about this. There are many advocates on opencarry.org that do it much better, and are not doing it to just look "cool". They are intentionally WAY friendlier while carrying, and happy to engage people in very civil conversation.

They also are very conscious of keeping their hands away from their pistol to minimize any perception of threat. Their goal is more to desensitize people to being around and interacting with those that are open carrying, so that others don't shit their pants and call in a "man with a gun" for no other reason.

That's my issue with open carry. What would be seen as non-threatening when they're not armed could be seen as threatening when they are armed.

I agree with what Frost says, but I don't agree with how the "protesters" go about what they do.

Yes, as gun supporters we need to be good stewards and sort of sell the idea. Specifically to the folks who are riding the fence or maybe never gave it any thought. Group of 2-10 people acting generally like assholes is not the way to go.

At least that is my opinion. I support open carry for handguns and rifles for a variety of reasons - but at this point we need to realize that the fence riders are our undecided voters.

I once read that it's something like 20% pro gun, 20% anti-gun and then the rest are on the fence or just don't understand. I used to be in that 60% (generally) but leaning anti-gun at one point.

Of course I'm not the cookie cutter situation, but pissing people off does not help sway the rest. We want changes for more pro-gun laws, well we need voters and supporters. Not people more afraid of them.

Personally, the "other thread" introduced how they were doing these things. *I* personally strongly support open carry for hand guns and I see the point and spirit of open carry for rifles. However, I too would get the hell out of dodge with people carrying rifles in that manner.

I can't agree with that.
I respect him for his service and the the sacrifice he's made.
However, I think he is a shining example of how much attention our returning soldiers need in coping with the real world. Especially if they've been wounded in a way that has compromised their way of life.

He exhibits extreme opinions and behavior that most people would say he should be on a watch list for. I think it he should have an express lane pass to best medical attention the U.S. of A. has to offer, to help get him back in touch with reality.

Also, i'm drunk right now, because I don't have to fix a single fucking thing at work until 12pm tomorrow.

i for one think concealed is better than open carry. UNLESS open carry requires some sort of shooting proficiency to have the ability to carry openly. i dont think just anyone should be able to strap a gun on there belt and walk around w/out knowing they can hit a target and not all the innocent people around should they have to use the weapon. i also think the CHL shooting is not anywhere near strict enough either. a blind person could probably pass the CHL shooting standard.

i support open carry, but i do not support being an idiot, if your walking up n down in front of my house w a weapon out for everyone to see, im calling the police, while holding a red dot on your ass from my window, going looking for trouble while brandishing a firearm is very foolish, and i do beleive if we can get open carry passed in tx, it will lower the crime rate even more, i would have no trouble setting down to a meal at a cafe where several patrons were wearing pistols on there belts, and i realize if we can get it passed, only idiots or going to be causing trouble w it , thats the bottom line!!!

Open carry is a real possibility, but it is not helped by these idiots who strap an AR 15 to their chest and walk into Home Depot. Then they look for confrontation from police and blow everything out of proportion. If we get open carry, which I fully support, it will be in spite of these idiots, not because of them.

And yes, I understand the Constitutional right and the law, but common sense goes a long way.
