OKYO — Taking the nation another step away from its post-war pacifism, the government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe discarded a half-a-century-old ban on the export of weapons and military hardware yesterday, in a move aimed at helping Japan assume a larger regional security role in order to offset China’s growing military might.

The decision, which had been under consideration for years before Mr Abe took office, replaced the self-imposed ban dating back to the late 1960s with new, still-restrictive guidelines that permit the export of weapons only to allies and partners who agree not to sell them to a third nation without Japanese approval.

I have tried to look for information about the type 64 and 89 rifles, and I can find almost nothing of any substance. They aren't just rare outside of Japan, they are non-existant outside of Japan.

All source information is in Japanese, and I can find no information about accuracy, reliability, or durability. However, as Howa made AR180s for Armalite, I imagine the design is more or less AR18 inspired (like damn near every other current generation assault rifle).

A 7.62x51 is less powerful than a commercial .308 win, so I hope it can handle the nato round.

Alex, does this mean you are adding a type 89 to your collection?
