  • Suggestions on optics.

What do I put on this thing now? I'm looking to spend around 200$ or less, and usually shoot 100-200 yards. I had a 3-9x40 on the other upper, but I'm not really satisfied with it. I know I'm not going to get the greatest for that price, but that's all I'm willing to spend right now on it.

    Before.

    After.

I love a good free trade.
A friend of a friend is an old Vietnam vet, and he had an AR15 built with a flat top upper. Then he decides he wants a fixed carry handle since that's what he carried in Vietnam. So I just traded him uppers, free trade, and the mutual friend (somewhat of a gunsmith) switched over my barrel to the flat top upper. Cool thing is, that this flat top has only had about 20-30 rounds through the rifle it came from.

He tried to trade me barrels too, but I have no business with an 11 inch barrel!!!

I know you said you didnt like the 3x9 but ive had no problems with my pro-staff.

Id like to find something with 14-16x but for under 200 itll be hard to find anything decent.

I'm looking for a rear sight lol so if you part with that one let me know if you sell it! But I'm in the same boat. I'm not looking to spend a ton of money on a red dot. But I've been told if you get a cheap one you'll regret it.

That's true. For plinking I bought a cheap leapers red dot which actually has pretty decent reviews and it's been great on every gun I've put it on. The downside would be the 8 MOA dot, haha. I've had it on my 10/22 for about 2 years, no problems at all. And I've had one on my G3 and it withstood the recoil.

Cheaper Than Dirt! is America's Ultimate Shooting Sports Discounter, and we live up to that title. Expect bulk ammo deals, discount firearms, parts to build your next gun and more.

It's cheaper than hell, and believe it or not it works pretty well. Keep in mind it is a $30 red dot though, and it's good for within 50 yards if you plan on using it for up close or run and gun ranges.

Probably not what you're looking for, but the Burris Fastfire II is a damn good sight within your budget (or at your budget). The only downside (or upside?) is they are tiny.

I've had very good luck with my vortex strike fire red dot.

I dont know how much they are now, but B&H optics usually where the cheapest.

Not sure on their scopes. Someone else can comment as im looking at one of the 16x

I would go with a Nikon Prostaff 3-9 x 50; $150 @ Academy. I think you will want the magnification for shooting out to 200 yards and the 50mm objective will gather more light for early morning, late evening shooting plus give a larger field of view than the 40mm. And, as stated earlier, Nikon will give you the best deal for the $$$$.

Well, to the OP - were you not happy with the 3x9 you had, or just not happy with a 3x9 on the rifle?

If you want a 3x9, I echo the Nikon Prostaff. There are places it (3x9x40 different then bronco's suggestion) can be had for 100 or maybe a little less. I've aimed with it in early morning light and could see just fine (although bronco71 is completely accurate with what he is saying.).

I've heard great things about the Burris that CJ posted and if you watch the usual sites, they run them on sale or you can get a lightly used one pretty cheap.

Over the last few months I've really started becoming more interested in AR and lately optics. It seems to me, for the 100-500 range if you don't rush you can find great optics at 100-200 off original price. Either used or on a great sale. Used seems okay to me if in good shape, as these better optics have lifetime warranties.

I have what is basically the same red dot sight, but made by tasco. http://www.amazon.com/Tasco-30mm-Rif.../dp/B000GF1HKQ
This is the third rifle I've had it on and it's been great (for what it is).
All I had to do was get a riser (a Promag PM066 in this case) and it works great, for about $50 total.

I'm looking at the vortex sparc and magnifier combo, around 190$ and 120$.

Take the $200 and put it in an envelope. Put money into that envelope until you can afford a decent optic. You'll be glad you didn't cheap out when all is said and done.

So if you are shooting 100-200 yards what is wrong with the 3x9? It is more then fine at that range, hell open sights would be fine.....
On your type setup I do not like traditional scopes at all.

I mostly do gun range shooting. I don't know a place locally where I could go to shoot further?

I dunno, if it were me for just the range I'd stay iron sights or go wiht a Nikon 3x9....

Then again I'm an optics idiot and my answer is always the Nikon 3x9. Anything else is all mystical to me.

That's pretty much all I do as well. I have an Eotech 512 Holosight on the way right now. Used a friends last week and had to get one. Got it for $400 including tax and shipping.

They are badass for quick target acquisition.
