This path of thinking is why we have the highest rate of incarceration in the world with no end in sight except large bills far into the future paying for men not to be in the work force.

The problem is not too lax sentencing. The problem is that too many things have been made against the law that are not inherently wrong and that has taken time and resources away from real problems that we used to lock people up for.
I did not know felons can vote in Texas. That is good to know.

I don't disagree that too many things are illegal that shouldn't be; there is a long list of laws I think should be taken off the books. But my point on sentencing ia that if it is illegal and we want to punish someone for it, then we need to stick to the punishment. Alot of criminals don't give a shit about being caught because it doesn't mean much today. Illegal aliens are a prime example of a law we have on the books but do not enforce the penalties for breaking .

Felons can apparently also attain a CHL.

Really? Where did you hear this? I know felons in Texas can get gun rights restored with a difficult process, but I thought getting a chl was not possible.

I know several felons that were doing plenty wrong when busted. Bad people though? Not really, but no self control when it matters.

My opinion on the subject is that I'd support felons having full rights restored, after sentence served and probation. However, I really also want to see the prison system fixed. As long as there are gangs fully operating in prison - the prison system is broken and there is less chance for the average fuck up to make good decisions.

I would guess that most people realize that one little difference could have ended up with them in jail. The first time offender (major or minor) is what I care about from a prison/rights restored point of view. Also, "major" or "felon" - is one thing - but fuck ya if convicted of rape, murder...etc. That serious of an offense negates your rights in society regardless of age. (in my book)

No it doesn't. I was trying to say that his statement implied that.
