  • Looking at Remington 700. which caliber?

Trying to decide between a .300 win mag or the .308.

This will be mostly for range fun in the 100-200 yards, a few hunting trips for a newb (business related), and be ready for the zombie apocalypse if it ever happens so 300-500 yd range if needed.

Seems I can find both calibers on the shelf at the local academy but which would you choose for ease of long range shooting?

    Gracias.

.308 no question. There's no reason to have a .300mag at those ranges. Cheap and easy to find ammo, staple caliber.

actually been seeing .300 win mag CHEAPER than .308 lately. maybe labels on shelves were screwed up?

Anyway, would the .300 win mag be better to start learning with as it shoots more flat than .308 at longer distances?

I have been trying to find some better ballistic data to compare the rounds but find very crappy charts and graphs made by 4th graders.

I'm finding some decent SPS models with threaded barrels so I could install a muzzle brake on the .308 rifles. .300 win mag rifles are a PITA to find. I think I want to buy a base model for the barrel and action and then find a better stock for it later and use the saved cash for better optics.

I suppose I could also build an AR-10 and have another use for .308 ammo too. Dangit! I had my heart set on a .300 win mag! LOL!

.308 will be easier to learn on. Also, you might look at a Savage 10PC. They've got an accutrigger, an accustock, a detachable box mag, a threaded barrel, and 5R rifling. SPS's are trash, unless you're going to use them for the action.

Have you considered .270? Or if you really want something to be able to keep for larger game eventually go 7mm Rem Mag.

Hmm. The two savage Mark II's we have for my wife and son have not been the best of rifles. Granted, they are .22LR, but we have had a ton of extraction problems. Savage Customer service was sort of crappy and I found an Internet "rig" that basically installed two springs on the extractors and has worked "ok" but isn't perfect. Magazines weren't real good either. Granted, these are .22's but the one I got my son was supposed to be the top of the line for the Mark II and it jammed on the 5th shot it ever took. It sat in the safe for nearly a year while I tried to get savage to help and I still had to buy the additional parts for the bolt. Was a pretty embarrassing issue nationally for Savage.

Is the Savage you are talking about getting good reviews?

Yeah. It's a different design altogether. I like it because it isn't a crazy tactical rifle, but it still has a lot of nice features. The problem you're having with the MKII's is because they used MIM to make those extractors, and they chip easily. I haven't had those problems out of my MKII, but I get where your hesitation lies. You should finger blast a model 10, 12, 14, or 16. They're all the same action, just different grades/styles.

Love the Rem 700, and 308 is a great caliber in that rifle.

Not a chipping extractor issue. The spring doesn't have enough pressure to keep it under the lip on the casing. Installing two springs doubles the "seat" pressure and keeps the extractor tight against the casing and yanks it out.

I honestly feel the root of the problem is the bullet chamber is machined wrong and is allowing too much gas/burned powder to get in behind the casing and is wedging it in place making it difficult to pull the casing out anyway. My CZ 455 can run 500 rounds of the dirtiest ammo there is and no have a single problem. These Mark II's, one a cabellas cheapo special and my son's BZEV model both have the same problem. I've tried about 8 different .22LR brands/types and the higher quality bullets do work somewhat better, but the CZ has fired all the same ammo and could care less.

Thanks for the suggestion and I will do some more research. Found that our local shop also carries the 10FCP-SR and it has a 10 round box mag. They are out of stock at the moment but looks like they are asking 975 NIB. I sent them an email to call me when they get one in to look at it.

Trigger time is far more important than how flat something shoots when it comes to getting experience. And with much less expensive ammo, .308 is without question the way to go.

I just finished building a Rem. 700 BDL (long action)in .270. I chose that caliber as an homage to my grandfather, a former Air Force sniper, who used that caliber in battle and for hunting. I am having the stock laser engraved with his headstone, and have encapsulated the final round he reloaded in epoxy, to be embedded in the stock also.

I pillar\glass bedded the action and free-floated the barrel, and added a Timney trigger set to 3lbs. I have ordered the DBM setup and will convert it as soon as it arrives.
Even with the shitty Tasco optics that came with the rifle, it shoots like a dream.

30.06/.270/.300wm (long action), or .308(short action), All are great choices. I have a .308 700(Manners rig, geissele triger, Bergera barrel, Viper vortex PST) and the .270, if you would like to shoot them both to compare, we can arrange something for sure. They all feel about the same IMO, so you can't go wrong.
