and how is a .223 going to damage the target but a 300 win mag isnt? lol
Its not about the size of the bullet that matters nor the weight, it is the speed. A .223 will usually be going around 3000-3200fps which will "ding" the steel. A 300 Win Mag is not going to be flying that fast and if it is, it will not be allowed.
Jason and Chad have made it clear in the linked thread that if you are going to be bringing ammo, you need to ensure it is flying less than 3100fps. They have never said that "no you cannot use that caliber", they have only stated that if you have a "hod rod" caliber, to dial it back otherwise it will not be allowed.
I shoot 7mm-08 so I do not have to worry about my speeds
Edit: Dee beat me too it

Velocity is the key. You would be amazed at what velocity will cause.
Velocity is only half of the equation
KE = 1/2 mv^2
so a slower bullet of much greater mass can still do more damage to your target.
Perfect example of this is from the latest myth busters episode. They accelerated a ping pong ball to 1100mph and yet it still wasn't lethal because it has very little mass.

You can work the numbers all you like, it is known and proven that speeds in excess of 3100fps damage the steel

ok so you are telling me that if I bring a 50bmg that is only producing a 2800 fps bullet that they are going to let me use it in the competition? I highly doubt it! And why is that might you ask? BECAUSE ITS GOING TO BLOW HOLES IN THE GD TARGETS!

It won't if you aren't using a target bullet. Also I'd like to see you compete in a hunting oriented comp with a 50 offhand shots would be interesting.

I am just using it as an example to show how dumb a velocity limitation is. a low mass high velocity bullet wont do more damage than a heavy slower bullet.
Yes it will a 22-250 will punch through while a 44 mag won't. A slower moving round with bullets designed for steel penetration will cause damage. That's like comparing the difference between my ap 30-06 stuff to hunting rounds. Like I posted above a target bullet like tge Amax won't do the damage you think on ar 500 steel.

Tell that to CJ

I thought about that about the time I hit submit. Either way put good hits on target with one standing is no easy thing.
Oh no doubt, I am sure there would be a bit of a flinch too
