Russian ammo wears barrels out twice as fast as domestic brass. There was an extensive test done that was posted last year. The amount you save from ammo goes right back into buying a new barrel. It breaks even.

how long should a typical barrel last with quality ammo, and what kind of effects start taking place when a barrel is on its last leg?

The difference in price between brass and steel cased (more specifically, copper jacketed and bimetal jacketed) ammunition means that you’ll have plenty of savings with which to buy new barrels – even if you shoot so fast that you replace them every 4,000 rounds. For this chart, brass ammunition was calculated at $130 per thousand higher than steel and replacement barrels at $250 apiece.

Was in the Lewisville Gander Mt. the other day just as they were putting out the case of Federal bricks and I was able to get 2 of them. They had some Remington Sub Sonic and plenty of CCI mini-mags.
