  • .303 question

I traded a Stevens model 64 for a British 303 and it has quite a bit of random markings on it that I have no idea about. The No4 Mk looks like it was roughly engraved or stamped on under 20 power magnification and you can see uneven lines on the rest of the numbers. Any idea about all of this?

Can't give you much info but I bet it looks like it's been to hell and back. I've seen only a handful of the Lee Enfield rifles in good shape.

That is no shit. Many of them were rearsenaled several times.

I have one I've never shot. My dad said it's fairly accurate considering the way it looks.

Dad has killed many deer with his that was cut down a little. It's not as good as his. 270 or my 7mm mag, but it's a good gun.

Try this site for starters. http://www.allaboutenfields.co.nz/

Off the top of my head - I can tell you it is:

            British 303 No4 Mk I = model and caliber.
ROF (F) = built by Royal Ordinance Factory - Fazakerley (suburb of Liverpool, England)
9/43 = manf. date of Sept. of 1943

There should be quite a few more markings including Arsenal proof and re-work proofs.

I have the same gun, I believe the same year even. The .303 seemed a little pricey. I've shot mine a few times.
