  • Ruger takedown is a great survival rifle to have. Another good choice is an AR15 for it's modularity, you can carry uppers with you.

When selecting weapons for all out survival, I personally am very concerned with reliability and parts availability. So for me the only two good choices are an AR15 or an AK. Secondly, it's ammo availability. So that's why out of all the guns to choose from, I'd pick an AK-101 (.223), preferrably an AK-102 if you had one. Great reliability, and a probably the most popular rifle round in the US. For my situation I'd have both, wife can carry one, I'd carry a short AR. The disadvantages to AK's is they need to be handled by someone with proficiency in iron sight shooting as they have pretty poor sights. Optics are difficult and cumbersome, and for night shooting they are terrible unless you install tritium sights, and even then it's pretty poor. So that's really your trade off between the two. Both are good choices, but I believe an AK should be left to more experience shooters given it's more difficult sights. Just about any novice shooter can handle an AR15 peep sight.

    • I can't stress how important proper foot car is for a ruck. Yall need socks. When your feet get wet from water or sweat and your feet are all torn up, your not going anywhere. There's a reason in the military multiple pairs of socks and powder are carried. Especially if you don't currently do any kind of hiking, yalls feet are gunna be fucked up nasty after the first day. I had to do a 12k with a 33lbs ruck under 120mins for a competition once and hadn't been practicing at all for it, even though I ran 3-4 times a week my feet were all torn up, for a few days. If you've never really done a ruck march of any type, you're gunna be in for a surprise

      • Assuming you are on foot:

Go do some real backpack in camping and see how much of these "necessities" go away lol. Weight adds up quick even with fairly level terrain... Honestly your best bet is to get out of the population center, and avoid confrontation. Trying to pack for a battle is a bad plan. Better off staying low and scavenging supplies as needed.

For the long haul I would only take a .22 pistol. Lightweight, small, and more than capable of taking game and providing some level of personal protection. I live near the edge of town and MAY consider taking the AR for the first couple of miles when the risk of confrontation is highest but it would be ditched for mobility.

Your other option is to build a light small AR. There's no reason you couldn't do both of what you're saying.

          • It was brought to my attention that I was completely overthinking the first bugout bag I ever put together. I found the biggest bag possible, threw as much shit in there that I possibly could, and in the end it over 80lbs. Fuck that! Over that past 10 months or so, I've been reading up on and studying bushcraft survival and I feel that it goes hand in hand with bugging out. If I have to bug out, I want to be able to make it to my survival destination within 5 -7 days, and the ability to move is key for me, especially if I'm carrying a rifle.

Most important is a solid pack with a waterproof liner or cover. What good are items it's raining and they're wet.

Call it lame but I always have the 5 C's of survival with me and they are as follows:
combustion - a way to make fire. (matches, duct tape, ferro rod, char cloth)
cutting tool - 4-5 inch carbon steel blade with a full tang and 90 degree edge on the back
            cordage - 100 feet of 550 paracord
container -i try to have 2 of these, one for boiling water/cooking, one for carrying water
cover - something to keep you dry from the elements like a poncho, wool blanket, tarp, or even a plastic garbage bag.

IMO, if you have those and know how to use them then you can survive for longer durations of time, given you know how to find food.

What's in the pack - I know all of this comes down to less than 50lbs worth of food.

clothing - 2 extra pair of non-cotton socks (dry feet are important), 1 extra shirt, pants, boxer briefs, all non-cotton items.
first aid kit with anticeptic, antibiotic cream, alcohol wipes, tweezers, antidiaherra medicine, headache medicine, bandages, gauze, quick clot, 2 hypodermic syringes, snake bit kit, scissors, and a turniquet
kammok - small hammock that fits into a bag about the size of a soup can
3 MRE's - rationed to 6-7 days worth of food.
            signal mirror
            compass
            waterproof map of texas highways
stainless steel canteen with wood burning stove base
            nalgene bottle
camelbak - fits into back of my pack (1.5 litres of water)
            100ft of 550 paracord
            waterproof matches
            ferro rod and striker
altoids tin with cottonballs dipped in vasoline
2nd altoids tin with char cloth
2 heavy duty 50gal trash bags
            small roll of duct tape
            3 life straws
            water purification tabs
2 small prepaid cellphones with 1000 minutes, both a cdma and gsm phones.
1 two way radio with 30 mile range - the other radio is in the hands of the person at my survival location and the radio will be turned on at sun up and sun down to communicate my position to them.
            bush style knife
AR15 that's been stripped down to 4 lbs
            10 mags with 30 rounds
            ruger 10/22 breakdown with 500rds
springfield XD with 10 mags at 16 rounds each
            flashlight with extra batteries
            headlamp with extra batteries
fishing line with extra hooks and small tackle kit (fits in altoids box)
            snare wire
            multi-tool

                          1. Step outside with a shipping container on your back.
                          2. Walk 2 miles.

No. I try not to watch so much TV that I think the world is going to end every 5 minutes, or that if it did I would be able to do anything about it.
