Most insurance companies only cover a small portion of losses to firearms due to fire, theft, loss, etc.
I think it's a good idea to purchase a rider - umbrella policy to cover anything above what your insurance company covers. Some insurance companies hate people who own guns and don't cover them at all.
If you're an NRA member you can get a decent policy from Armscare. I think it's a pretty good bargain in the event you have a catastrophic event involving the loss of your valued firearms. It's not too expensive given the peace of mind.
Coverage also covers sights, mags, ( clips ) slings, etc.
Your homeowners insurance should cover your ammo.
