Everything I have read says stay the hell away from car batteries for casting for that exact reason. I am saving wheel weights for when I get a casting setup.

The reason you don't want to, is it's got an unpredictable hardness. It's usually very soft, so it's tough to push a bullet made from battery lead without leading the bore. You can add tin or antimony to it and harden it right up, though.

I had also read that the people who did attempt it had to add to it for hardness. But the whole acid part of the equation just made me turn to other sources of lead for my future casting.

The lead wouldn't be acidic, provided you rinse it off. Battery acid can be neutralized with baking soda. The acid in question is sulfuric acid. All that would be there is an oxidized surface layer, or lead sulfate if the epsom salts in the battery aren't doing their job, but that would take care of itself when you melt the lead down. The acid can't soak into the lead. It's just lead. Don't pour it out on concrete or metal. Pour it into a sandy spot you don't care about in the yard, and rinse that spot down until it's mud, and rinse out the battery with a water hose. If you feel extra uncertain about it, I don't mind helping you.

If you want to come help bring your ass. I have a bunch of car batteries and aircraft batteries. We can split up what ever lead we get out of them.

pure lead is good for swaging jacketed hollow points.
