  • Buying a gun from private sale legality/confidence

So, in the past couple of weeks I've had, and taken, the opportunity to pick up a couple of guns. All of the transactions have come from "decent" folks who seem to be on the "up and up". However, my wife asked me how I knew that the guns weren't stolen. I simply replied that I had no idea. (Not smart, I know.) However, I pose to you the question, how, or CAN, one determine if a gun is stolen? Is there a web site one can navigate to and enter serial #'s? Or, do you have to contact an LEO and have them run the #'s?
Next, as an FFL, how do THEY know the guns they are transferring are legit?

HotGunz Free Stolen Firearms Database. Check a guns serial number to see if it is stolen or report your missing gun absolutely free!

^^^ My P95 doesn't show up on either of those. Of course local PD probably didn't do anything when I reported it stolen anyway.

        Those are far from accurate.

Best thing you can do is get someone an LEO to run it for you and verify it that way.
