  • Lookin for some handgun shooting advice.

For my whole life I have shot right handed, left eye closed. I started realizing I was having a problem when I absolutely could not shoot with both eyes open. I couldn't focus on the front sight or the target. Even if I was attempting to focus on one I would see two of the target and the front sight. I couldn't figure out my problem. Well I have figured it out. I'm left eye dominant.

I have been practiced for about 15 minutes today dry firing to try to get used to it how I point the weapon now. I was compensating so much for using my right eye that now when I point the weapon I am off to the side. I am just getting frustrated having to re learn where to hold the gun in relation to my body. It's gonna be a long time consuming process but I'll be able to do it.

I guess I'm asking if anyone here is cross eye dominant and just looking for some help getting used to it.

(To remedy this for both eyes open I have chosen the option to shift the gun to the left so it is in front of my dominant eye rather than twisting my head or learning to shoot left handed)

I went from right eye dominate to left eye dominate with age. This getting old thing sucks. I was shooting right eye pistol and could not hit anything. I went to a shooting coach and he figured it out. I drop my left elbow and move right arm left. I am relearning to shoot and am months and 500+ rounds into it and getting much better.

      Practice and a good coach.

I’m left eye dominant and shoot pistols right handed. I’ve always been this way, so don’t have any great advice other than just keep practicing.

I'm the same way, my Dad taught me how to test for dominance when I was a little kid. Good luck.

I'm right eye and shoot right handed. I find I don't care for shooting pistols with both eyes open though.

My suggestion, practice.... practice and more practice. I do a bit of dry practice at home, and I'm considering the laserlyte system for more practice. My wife would like it too.

I'm pretty much just dry firing. Every chance I get I snatch my bosses SIRT Glock.

I'm cross-eye dominated as well. Here's a couple of things to try...

                  - If you are currently using a weaver stance, it will take an exaggerated shift of the gun to the left side, and twisting of the head to the right to get the sight to align with your left eye. To the point where I completely lose my peripheral vision on the left side. Try using an isosceles stance where it will take much less shifting to line up the sight with your left eye and still maintain your peripheral vision.

                  - Another tip is from rifle shooting: "Find the target with your eyes, shoot the target with your scope". Using an isosceles stance, I'm able to shoot accurately with both eyes open in most situation. But it is still a challenge to engage target at a distance, or trying for best accuracy. In that case, I will align the sight the best I could using the method above, then close my right eye to make final adjustments and firing the shot. Then open the right eye again after the shot.

                  - One more option is to train yourself to be a left handed shooter. While I'm able to shoot both left and right handed, there are simply too many years of shooting right handed for me to overcome. If you are a relatively new shooter, this may be easier for you.

I've heard of people training their eyes to get it back to same-eye dominate, but I just didn't have any lucks with that.

I was left eye dominant, but I got over it.

Seriously, you can work through it and train your brain to use the other eye when shooting. My dad figured it out when I was shooting in a youth skeet league, and I did a series of eye exercises to work through it.

Now that I got the requisite joke out of the way, read this. It has a lot of great advice, especially about cross dominance...

Currently I am working on shooting isosceles and shifting the gun 1"-2" to the left on order for it to be in front of my left eye. I just have a ton of habits to break.

Give these a try, they work really well because you keep peripheral vision, and only block the forward facing vision in that eye. You can also do it with the frosted scotch tape.

I think my issue is I've been shooting with my right eye for so long it has become closer to my dominant eye. When I focus on the front sight I see two of the target.
