  • Finally pulled the trigger..

After going back and forth on buying a new pistol, I FINALLY decided to buy the Baretta PX4 Storm Compact 9mm at Cabelas. It was $549.99 but I had $400 in gift certificates. So it was only $200 after taxes.

Next up is a refresher course in gun safety, getting a safe, and then the CHL. I'm going out to a buddies on Saturday. He has a few acres around Aubrey that has a firing range. I also found out that a buddy at church makes holsters as a hobby.

However I do have a question? The slide catch and safety/decocker are ambidextrous. Is it possible for a gunsmith to modify this for right handed shooters only? I haven't decided to do this yet, but I can see that it would knock a few millimeters off the width of the weapon, eliminating a couple of points that could dig into my side. Does it make sense to even consider it?

Congratulations and nice choice! As far as modifying it, I wouldn't even consider it unless it was available as a factory option (and as far as I know it wasn't).

Where do you carry? I really don't see a few millimeters mattering. And the only way removing those would keep them from digging into you is if you carried SOB or weak side cross draw

Congrats on the new piece. Your gonna love it. I came so close to buying one last summer when i got my taurus .45. I just couldnt convice my self to spend that much on a compact 9mm that was gonna take a beating from being carried. That being said, i still wish i would have dropped the extra 250 on the beretta.

Haven't decided that yet. Going to figure it out Saturday when I get with my buddy that makes holsters. I'm thinking back upper hip area. He's going to bring a few holsters for me to try out.

One thing on any mods, I was going to check with Baretta before giving it further consideration to make sure it doesn't void the warranty.

I've wanted one of those since they announced they were making a compact to bridge the gap between full-size and sub-compact. Mainly because it is ambidextrous and I'm left-handed. Supposedly the best shooter out of the three. The full-size version has a right-handed slide release and safety, check into seeing if those will fit. If they don't, I wouldn't mess with it.

Choose to listen to me or not, but IMO small of back isn't one of the best places to carry. For a few reasons

If you fall it can cause some injury if you land on your gun

Some people muzzle sweep themselves while drawing

If a bad guy were to find out you had a gun it is easier to take it away

Drawing is slower if not practiced. (there is excess motion in having to reach behind you, then come all the way back around) To add on to that rounds on target cannot happen as fast as you could carrying 3 o clock or appendix.

Just my suggestion, I would look at carrying 2-4 o'clock or appendix.

                Some food for thought

Falling on it and it causing injury is really a non issue. Regardless of where you have the gun on you, if you fall on it it is going to hurt. I haven't heard one first hand story about permanent damage done by carrying in the small of your back.

Muzzle sweep - keep your finger off the bang switch till you are ready to fire. Also train how to properly draw.

While it is slightly easier to disarm someone carrying SOB it really isn't a factor. If a CHL holder is going to use their firearm chances are it will be some thug getting fired at. It isn't like you are Jack Bauer being taken hostage by the terrorists.

Age has little to do with anything, experience does. I have been packing a gun at 3 o clock, SOB, on my ankle, or in my pocket since you were 14. Most of my carry is SOB without a holster.

Do you think there are any disadvantages to carrying at 2 or 4 o'clock?

I've got the full-size PX4 .45 and an XDS .45. Finally get to shoot them on Tuesday. Hopefully get a CHL class in January.

The PX4 is such a sexy gun.

I have to admit, that is what initially drew me to it. Firing it a few times sealed the deal.

My initial thought was to carry it, but I'm an average build guy and I don't think it's possible. It makes a nice gun between the mattresses with a light on it.

For a real carry gun I was leaning heavily towards an M&P Shield but read the great reviews on the XDS. Hope it lives up to its name. Looking at Bravo Concealment for a holster.

Hell, I've never even shot a 45. Lol. I just don't want to have to buy multiple calibers. Seems to make sense to me anyway. We'll be running my wife's new Colt 1911 through its paces as well.
