  • Those with SBR's, do you travel with it?

I was looking into getting an SBR but found out on theATF site that you cannot travel out of state with it without getting permission to take it out of the state from the ATF.

Has anybody done this and how long does it take to get permission to travel from the ATF?

    Thanks

I sent a letter off right after last Thanksgiving requesting permission to travel to Oklahoma since I always shoot at the H&H range in OKC.

Still haven't received anything back...makes me sick that we have to beg and plead for permissions from da gubbment just to take our NFA rifles with us, when I can just pack up 5 normal AR-15's and 3 shotguns and 5 pistols and take them to Alabama and shoot on my Cousins land with no issues.

Really? Is it that big of a deal?

You have to fill out a 5320.20 to travel interstate. Approval times of that form ranges greatly. I usually do mine a year in advance of going somewhere and submit them by fax. If it's somewhere you travel to a lot, you can submit the form for a full year of travel. I've had them come back in the same week, sometimes a month later.

Another item worth mentioning is if you convert your gun back to what the ATF defines as a normal rifle under the GCA you don't have to do any travel request form since the item is no longer an NFA item under definition even though it's still registered. But it negates the point of shooting your SBR.

In the end it fucking sucks the whole way around.

Just another pita about NFA laws. Lately 5320.20's have been taking 2-3 months.

          That's absurd.
